A Muslim League worker was hacked to death in Tanur, Malappuram district on Thursday night in a clash between Communists and Islamists.

According to the police, the recent episode of violence is a continuation of the on-going turf war between CPM and Muslim League in the region.

The Muslim League, the second biggest partner of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), alleged CPM workers were behind the attack.

According to reports, Muslim League worker M Ishaq (36) was on the way back to home from a local mosque after prayers. He was chased and attacked by a group of assailants. Though he was rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

Muslim League leaders sought inquiry into the role of former CPM Kannur district secretary P Jayarajan in the murder. Jayarajan, an accused in several murder cases, was reportedly attended a CPM party meeting in the area last week. The Muslim League has called a shutdown in Malappuram on Friday.

Following repeated violence between Communists and Muslims in coastline area of Malappuram, the police had called a peace meeting a few months ago.
