Kerala Floods: ‘It’s a man-made disaster’, Amicus curiae exposes CPM Govt, blames bad dam management, demands judicial inquiry

Amicus Curiae’s report submitted before the Kerala High Court is matching to what BJP and other opposition parties have been alleging, the killer floods of August 2018 were manmade. Reports suggest, the HC-appointed Amicus Curiae reports say that the state government failed in gauging the intensity of the rains. The state government did not take the weather forecasts of India Meteorological Department (IMD) seriously. Dams were opened sans complying with the stipulated measures properly. Orange and Red Alerts were not provided properly; in some cases, alerts were given only few minutes before opening the dams.

Moreover, the volume of the mud settled in the dams was not taken into consideration when the volume of the water in them was calculated.

The report also expressed anxiety concerning the diverting of the relief funds to the dependants of some deceased leaders.

The report demands a judicial inquiry into the whole affairs. The report was prepared after going through all related documents including IMD forecasts.

Reacting to the Amicus Curiae’s shocking findings, BJP state president Adv P S Sreedharan Pillai unleashed a scathing attack on the CPM-led left government. He held both the chief minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan and Electricity minister MM Mani responsible for the killings of more than 450 flood victims and said that both of them should be booked on murder charges. He also demanded that the flood compensation be doubled in the wake of the Amicus Curiae findings.
