The Reformer Seer

Chennai:
The 69th Shankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham and one of the most influential spiritual leaders Swami Jayaendra Saraswati passed away on February 28 at Chennai”s Ramchandra Hospital. He was admitted to the hospital last month when he collapsed after his blood sugar reportedly dipped. He was put on ventilator by the doctors that time and his condition became stable after it. Later, he was discharged and he returned to normalcy. He visited Delhi last November and was not in best of his health. The bodywas taken to the Kanchi Mutt.
Born as Subramaniyam on July 18, 1935 at Irulneekki in Thanjavur District he had Veda Adyayanam at Tiruvidaimarudur under the direction of Mahaswamjgal (His Holiness Paramacharya) and was initiated into Sanyasa on March 22, 1954. He was declared as successor Acharya and given the Sanyasa name Sri Jayendra Saraswati Sri Pada.
In the footsteps of the Mahaswamigal, he attracted people from every nook and corner. He intensified the activities of the Mutt cover new social objectives—education, health, employment, temple renovation etc. It is due to his untiring efforts, the Peetam established religious and social institutions in many parts of the country. The Peetam has now become a beehive of socio-religious renaissance. He was the only Shankaracharya after the Adi Shankara who visited Manasarovar and Kailash in 1998; there he installed the idol of Adi Shankara. He had the unique distinction in being honoured by both Nepal and Chinese Governments. In known recent history, he is the only Shankaracharya to visit Dhaka in Bangladesh in June 2000.
In his tribute RSS Sarsanghachalak Shri Mohan Bhagwat and RSS Sarkaryavah Shri Bhaiyaji Joshi said: “The Kanchi seer, throughout his life, was
dedicated to the cause of eliminating social evils developed in the Hindu society due to any reason and running various sewa activities for the upliftment of the weaker sections of the society. He made successful efforts to reestablish Vedic culture and philosophy, transform the Hindu society and also to make it strong enough to face any challenge. He may not be with us in his physical form, but his inspiring memories will always energise the entire Hindu society.”               n

Promoting indigenous science

Jaipur: Rajasthan unit of Vijnan Bharati and MNIT jointly organised a three-day Science Fair at Malaviya Technology Institute from February 26 to 28. Inaugurating the Fair, Vijnan Bharati organising secretary Shri Jayant Sahasrabuddhe said the Vijnan Bharati is promoting indigenous science knowledge all over the country. Referring to eminent scientist of the country Dr CV Raman after whom the Science Day is observed all over the country on February 28, he said Dr Raman was of the view that science plays a very big role in development of the country.
Dr CVR Murthy, director of IIT Jodhpur stressed on development of technology in the country on large scale. He emphasised on sharpening the skills of the students in the field of science and technology. Dr Udai Kumar Yagareddy, director of MNIT, underlined the need to search and promote talent from rural areas. Shri Ramcharan Bohra, MP, focused on the development of agriculture. Smt Manan Chaturvedi, chairperson of Women and Children Commission and many other eminent personalities also addressed.    n

SJM for price caps on medical devices

New Delhi: Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) has urged the Central Government to instruct the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) to fix the prices of medical devices, which are already notified as drugs under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and Rules. It also sought revamping of the DPCO 2013 to remove loopholes and introduce a cost-based price fixation. The SJM asked for fixing the cost of treatment by fixing the charges of procedure, and fixed cost of treatment such as diagnostics services, consultation charges and equipment cost. The SJM also sought investigation into the anti-competitive practices followed by some hospitals in pricing of medicines and medical devices under Section 19(i)(b) of the Competition Act.
The SJM said it is not the manufacture, but the corporate private hospitals, which are benefiting due to lack of regulation on prices. Since majority of the population goes to private hospitals, there is a duty of both the central and state governments to take measures to ensure access to healthcare, a constitutional obligation. Another major area of overcharging as per the NPPA analyses is the diagnostic charges.    n
