Sabarmati based Hemachandracharya Sanskrit Pathshala attracts global attention by producing world

champion in Mathematics

Pramod Kumar

The Indian traditional Gurukul system of education attracted global attention on July 24 when Sabarmati based Hemachandracharya Gurukulam student Tushar Vimalchand Talawat won the world championship of International Mathematics Competition-2016. Around 1200 best students from all across the world had participated in the championship conducted by Aloha International in Indonesia.
The victory added to the pride of India and also made Hemachandracharya Gurukulam the centre of discussion and appreciation. Gujarat Governor Prof O.P. Kohli and Chief Minister Anandiben Patel applauded Tushar for such a spectacular achievement. Due to this achievement, the ancient powerful knowledge treasure of Vaidik Mathematics also got rejuvenated again. Many countries and scientists are researching on Vaidik Mathematics across the world, but unfortunately in our own country the non-inclusion of this most simple form of Mathematics in school syllabus has barred students from learning it.
Tushar, in October 2015, scored first rank in Gujarat State level Mathematics competition among 5300 participants, where he solved 70 questions in just 3.30 minutes. In the same year, he participated in a competition at Chennai where he answered 70 questions much faster than the computer in just 3.10 minutes. Around 4300 participants were present there and Tushar was selected for participating in the international competition. Even the judges using calculators were unable to match his speed of solving the problems.
Founded by a visionary Shri Uttambhai Shah, the Gurukulam is free education hub that inculcates in its students the knowledge using pure Indian teaching techniques. Unlike other institutions, the focus here is on practical knowledge that students must possess in dealing with daily life situation. A student gets expertise on number of arts and skills. It is crystal clear that the students passing from the Gurukulam system would mesmerise the whole world by their unique and unbearable capacities.
“This institution has started an evolution of education system in India. Many such Gurukuls have now been working in metro cities like Bengaluru, Kolhapur, Mumbai, Jodhpur and Ahmedabad after getting inspired from Hemachandracharya Gurukulam and by taking guidance from Bharatiya Shikshan Mandal. Such Gurukuls will now be opened in every district,” said Shri Mukul Kanitkar, national joint organising secretary of Bharatiya Shikshan Mandal adding that their focus at the moment is on Acharya Nirman as there shall be a great demand for teachers in every Gurukul.
Appreciating the efforts of Tushar’s Acharya Jayendrabhai Rathod, director of the Gurukulam Shri Uttambhai Shah said, “Present education system has been derailed from the original vision of creating great personalities. It is confined to narrow mind of creating only job-oriented candidates who work merely as ‘workers’ and not as the contributors in the society. The present syllabus is not character oriented, thereby ignoring the fact that humanity needs to be taught. This has led the society to witness the sad incidences of violence, rapes, etc.”
According to Dr Deepak Koirala, Principal of the Gurukulam, the children between the age 8-12 are admitted. Presently, 90 children study in the Gurukulam under the guidance of 150 Acharyas. “The prime objective of the Gurukulam is all round personality development. The curriculum has been designed involving 72 Kalas for boys and 64 Kalas for girls. Though no certificate is provided after completion of education, the extraordinary talent of the students makes them different,” said Dr Koirala adding that “the children studying in the Gurukulam will, after completion of education, make Bharat Jagadguru through their talent”.
