New Delhi:
Group of Intellectuals and Academicians (GIA), as a forum of professional and articulate women voicing a fact based and sane alternate discourse in response to socio-political events in the country, extended support to the government of J&K, State Police and Paramilitary Forces fighting in Jammu & Kashmir and appealed to them to make all required efforts at the earliest for the restoration of peace in Kashmir Valley. It also appealed to the people all over the country to extend full support to security forces to boost their moral.
“We observe with concern that the civilians in the Valley are being manipulated to clash with the Police and even small children are being used as couriers and shields, leaving them vulnerable to injuries. The key arterial roads in the Valley have been taken over by rioters. Police stations are being attacked and arsenal and guns being looted. Grenades have been lobbed at a Police station in Yaripora. They have undertaken to defame the Jammu and Kashmir Police and security forces in the State thereby making the region tenser and volatile and restoration of peace more difficult,” said a statement issued by the GIA in New Delhi on July 19 after the protest from Constitution Club to Amar Jawan Jyoti. A large number of intellectuals joined the march.  After the protest march a memorandum was submitted to Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh pledging support to the security forces in Kashmir and requesting to make all efforts to restore normalcy in Kashmir.

Violent clashes in University of Hyderabad

N Nagaraja Rao

Hyderabad: University of Hyderabad witnessed violent clashes again when the students belonging to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) objected to a programme held to denounce the police and paramilitary personnel action against rioters in Jammu & Kashmir. The clashes occurred outside a hostel in the campus. The programme was organised by the Left leaning student union at the Shopping Complex to “condemn the police action against the rioters and the violations of Human Rights in the Valley”.
Accusations and counter accusations by rival unions were hurled against each other. Amol Singh, an M Phil (political science) student, said he was beaten up by the members of ABVP. While ABVP members alleged that Amol, and non-boarders beat up G Kailasam, an MA student, which left him with a fracture in his left leg. Both groups lodged complaints with the police. A bike rally organised by  the ABVP was allegedly attacked and slogans were raised demanding ‘Azaadi’ to Kashmir. The situation was similar to JNU in the past and unparliamentary words were uttered denouncing Bharat Mata and the Indian Army. Police intervened and assured the ABVP of early action against non-boarders who were believed to have been sheltered by the SFI. Some students revealed that few Kashmiri students were spoiling the atmosphere of the campus with their separatist agenda. As a precaution, police and paramilitary forces kept vigil at the gates of the University.
According to the Pro Vice Chancellor Vipin Srivastava of Hyderabad University a group of around 15 students and two faculty members gathered at the Shopping Complex and conducted a meeting on Kashmir issue, even though the University Security Officer denied them permission and continued with speeches. Later, another section of students, objected to the meeting and a scuffle broke out resulting in minor injuries.
N Susheel Kumar, a PhD student in the University, alleged that slogans were raised against the Indian Army at the meeting. Protesting against the sloganeering, the ABVP members took out a rally after the meeting ended.
