World this Week

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government has asked the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) to vacate office in capital city of India situated in a bungalow on Purana Qila Road, which has been serving as its office for the last four decades.
Very few people know about United Nation Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP). It was set up under the United Nation resolution with a mandate to observe ceasefire on the line of control in 1951.

$img_titleThe UNMOGIP had replaced United Nations Commissions for India and Pakistan (UNCIP) that was monitoring the ceasefire since 1949, and shuttles its headquarters between Islamabad and Srinagar for six months every year.
According to the sources, Modi government has conveyed to the UN, that the UNMOGIP’s role has been overtaken by the Shimla Agreement and the consequent establishment of the Line of Control (LoC), and now it has no relevance and role to play in New Delhi.
The opposition also backed the NDA government and said UNMOGIP mandated to monitor cease-fire violations in Jammu & Kashmir and has outlived its relevance and asked the government to take the issue appropriately
On the issue Pakistan’s Foreign Affairs spokesperson Tasneem Aslam said that the step will not affect the legal proceedings in the Kashmir issue. “Asking them to move out of the building does not abolish the mandate which was given by the UN Security Council in 1951 under Resolution 91. As long as the Kashmir dispute is not resolved, the UNSC mandate remains. These measures are inconsequential and they do not have any impact on the legal status of the dispute,” she said.
The step is seen as clear message that Modi Government doesn’t want any international interference on the Kashmir topic.

Gaza Getting Worse

Gaza is in news for more than a month but very few would know what actually Gaza is? Gaza is a region on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea that borders Egypt on the southwest for 11 kilometres and Israel on the east and north along a 51 km border, and is amongst the most densely populated places in the world.
Gaza’s story came into limelight with the killing of 4 young boys, 3 Israelis who were kidnapped and killed by the Hamas (a part of an International Islamist Movement that controls Gaza and does not recognize Israel) in the first incident, and one Palestinians in the second incident. Following which anger and polarisation rose on both sides and this converted into war, because of which, till date, tens of thousands of Palestinian residents of northern towns in Gaza have left their homes and 227 Palestinians have died.
Hamas and Israel has a long history of antagonism—Hamas conducted a significant number of suicide bombings inside Israel during the early 2000s — and is a major contributor to the current crisis. Both refuse to negotiate openly and directly and neither trusts the other even a little bit. As such, even small provocations have the potential to escalate rapidly.

India Helps Lanka to Set-up Varsity

Indian Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sri Lankan Government for setting up of a Faculty of Agriculture and a Faculty of Engineering for the University of Jaffna at Kilinochchi on July 14.
The MoU was signed by High Commissioner of India, YK Sinha, and the Secretary to the Ministry of Higher Education, Dr. Sunil Jayantha Nawaratne, in the presence of Sri Lanka’s Minister of Higher Education, SB Dissanayake and Ms Vasanthy Arasaratnam, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jaffna in Colombo.
India will set up the physical infrastructure for the Faculty of Engineering and Agriculture. Will train teaching staff of the two faculties at prestigious Indian colleges, and provide support for curriculum development, faculty exchanges, training and research
The estimated cost of 30 crore rupees (600 million SLR) for the project will be given by India through grant assistance. And the project will directly benefit the students in the war torn northern region of Sri Lanka.
