Analysis: The Bloodletting Terror In Iraq

The mutilated bodies strewn across the streets of Mosul, the second largest city of Iraq reflect the horror of brutal and barbaric terror which outdoes all terror attacks undertaken, hitherto anywhere worldwide. The fierce onslaught of 1500 bloodletting militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), in pursuit of its motto of creating a caliphate by spreading jehad across the world has been so lethal that even the soldiers, almost outnumbering the jihadists 10 times, stripped off their uniforms in streets out of terror and fled away along with half a million innocent people.

The 40 Indians abducted in Iraq are safe and are in a government building. When the situation normalizes, we will try to get them released. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said, “His government would bear the entire expenditure for safe return of Punjabis who have been abducted in Iraq. We’ve asked the the Centre to take immediate diplomatic steps to secure their release”.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has given a firm assurance that all efforts would be made for safe evacuation of people who have been stranded in Iraq.

The fleeing soldiers of Iraqi army left a huge cache of America-supplied arms, ammunition and armoured vehicles along with six Black Hawk helicopters in the hands of the dreaded militants. Huge cash, almost around 500 billion Dinars, is lying in the vaults of the banks of Mosul, which ideally should have been burnt before soldiers fled Mosul.

It’s the Obama administration that is being held responsible for the crisis in Iraq. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s on Sunday accused the US of trying to retake control of Iraq by exploiting and flaring sectarian rivalries, as Sunni insurgents drove toward Baghdad from new strongholds along the Syrian border. This condemnation comes after President Barack Obama offered to send 300 military advisers to help the Iraqi government.
It is being said that the ISIS fighters were fuelled by the unwarranted intervention of the western powers in Syria to destablise Bashar Assad and are responsible for mis-handling the Syrian crisis. The dreaded jihadi organization ISIS and similar terror groups acquired the present-day strength, solely from the arms supplied and the aid given by the Obama Administration to the terrorist groups including the ISIS and other opposition groups in Syria for fighting against the Syrian government. Indeed, the US is being alleged to have crossed the moral red line, never to be crossed by a responsible regime of first order in a civilized society, when it announced to arm the terrorist groups in Syria.
It was only 14 months ago, in April 2013 when, the ISIS, confined to Iraq alone, got tempted to expand across the border into Syria, just to get the US aid and arms being given to fight against Bashar Assad regime in Syria. It was last year, it (the ISIS) changed its name from Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) to Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) by adding words “and al-Sham” with its name, which means “Greater Syria”.
It was by virtue of the arms and money provided by the US alone that, it (ISIS) could capture the east-Syrian town of Raqqa as a bare to expand quickly. Earlier till 2010, it (ISIS) used to fight only as part of the Al-Qaeda. Now, it imposes taxes independently as sovereign state in the parts of Syria and Iraq, which it has conquered, and is reported to mobilize funds by ransoming foreign hostages.

Chris Ernesto has also observed in the ‘Antiwar.com blog’ on June 15, 2014 that “Washington added more fuel to the fire in Syria by announcing on June 6 that it would be sending “lethal aid” to the opposition there. National Security Advisor, Susan Rice insisted that US weapons will only go to “vetted” opposition groups. Indeed the arms have found their way into the hands of jihadi terrorists. The only question is how many of the lethal weapons Washington sent to Syria are now inside Iraq?
Now, when the ISIS has spinned off independently with American weapons and aid under Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, an Iraqi jihadist, it aims to control a bigger area encompassing parts of Syria as well as Iraq for dispensing its own mandate of ban on smoking, music and unveiled women-it may also aspire to capture both Iraq and Syria. But the ruthless slaughtering of Shias, Christians and Alawites, an offshoot from which the Syrian President, Assad hails and, sending of suicide-bombers to market places without bothering for civilian casualties by the ISIS ever since 2011, is described as a dangerous strategy by the Islamic experts like Hassan Abu Hanieyeh as well, who is a Jordanian expert on Jihadist movements.
Presently ISIS is estimated to be having around 6000-7000 fighters in Iraq and 4000-5000 in Syria. This figure includes 3000 foreigners from Chechenya, France, Britain and other parts of Europe. Their rank and file is bound to grow from the prisoners being released by them from city after city falling into their hands. Ultimately, if it takes over Iraq, the geo-political scenario would feel its tremors. The civilians and minority groups in the terror-stricken areas deserve full protection of their lives. So, a full session of the UN General Assembly has to be convened on the issue including an automated rule-based intervention.  -Dr Bhagwati Prakash
