The country is suffering from violence with gun battles between pro-Russian rebels and Ukraine forces seeking to gain control of the restive region. India was the first of the United Nation members States, who supported the breaking away of Crimea on grounds that it was the people of Crimea's choice.
In a statement by foreign ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin around 1,000 nationals, most of whom are medical students are being evacuated in which 350 students are from Kerala, 300 from Tamil Nadu, 150 from Andhra Pradesh, 60 from Punjab, 25 each from Jammu and Kashmir and Maharashtra, 20 from Uttar Pradesh and, ten students are from Gujarat.
The evacuation arrangements were made in cooperation with the Ukraine government. The Ukraine embassy in New Delhi said on its website that since 1957, Indian students are studying in Ukrainian universities.
It said in academic year 2012-2013, about 3,839 Indians received higher education in Ukraine and as of now approximately 2,500 Indian students are studying medical and engineering in Ukraine. n
