Obama Committed to Immigration Reforms?
For nurses, June 10 has come as a gift as United States President Barack Obama has asserted his commitment to immigration reforms during a meeting with nurses at the White House.
In the meeting with the nurses, Mr Obama said that by reforming the legal immigration system the US can bolster public health by providing immigrant nurses an opportunity to stay in the US legally and grow their skills. He also highlighted the importance of nurses and medical professionals. The President reaffirmed that he will continue to do what he can to rally supporters because he wants to see immigration reform become a reality. According to 2006 report of the World Health Organization, total number of nurses working in the healthcare field in the US has decreased from 2,669,603 in the year 2000 to 2,262,020 in the year 2001with a simultaneous increase in nurse responsibilities, and has reported decline in the number of applicants to baccalaureate program.

Earlier on June 5, Saudi Arabia’s health ministry has also recruited 1,800 Indian nurses to work in various government hospitals. The new nurses would assume their duties within a month after completing their recruitment procedures. According to the reports, the nurses would be coming from India on a renewable contract of one year. The step taken by both the countries is expected to boost the morale of the nurses.
