SHRI Anand Kumar, a mathematics teacher from Patna, Bihar, has been selected for Prof. Yeshwantrao Kelkar Yuva Puraskar 2010. The Selection Committee selected his nomination in appreciation for his project, ‘Super 30’, an ambitious and innovative educational programme for the talented students belonging to economically deprived sections of the society. The Puraskar comprises of Rs 25,000 in cash, a certificate and memento.
The Puraskar was jointly instituted by the ABVP and the Vidyarthi Nidhi in 1991 to commemorate the inspiring life of the towering personality of Prof. Yeshwantrao Kelkar. Its objective is to encourage efforts of young social workers in various fields of public service, bring them in limelight and express gratitude towards them on behalf of the entire youth community. Since 1991, 22 youth have been honoured with the Puraskar.
Since beginning of the ‘Super 30’ project of Shri Anand Kumar, a total of 212 students from economically deprived families have succeeded in getting admission in IITs. Be it brick kiln workers, rickshaw pullers, landless farmers, roadside vendors and the likes, they all have experienced the change with sheer disbelief in their eyes that their children are now going to be top technocrats. Today, Shri Kumar is ushering in a silent revolution in the backwaters of Bihar through his highly successful initiative ‘Super 30’. It is nothing but a befitting answer to the commercialisation of education. The Puraskar will be presented by well-known music expert and Oscar prize winner Shri Rasool Pokutty on December 28 at the special session of the 56th National Conference of ABVP which will be held in Bengaluru from December 25 to 28.
