THE annual general body meeting of Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat was organised in Bhopal from April 2 to 4. A total of 272 workers from 88 districts of 29 Prants participated in the meeting.

The meeting warned the central government not to bend under the international pressure over genetically modified food. “This general body meeting of Grahak Panchayat strongly opposes any of the moves aimed at allowing the genetically modified food in the country. India is the first country in the world which appears so much eager to allow the GM food. Whereas the scientists of other countries are against allowing such food. They believe that adequate research and experiments have not been done on it so far and most of the experiments conducted so far have shown that the food is dangerous for the human beings. The cultivation of it is highly harmful for the fertility of the soil as well as for reuse of the seeds,” said the resolution adopted at the meeting.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chauhan also addressed the workers and declared to set up an independent consumer ministry under his government. He said December 24 would be observed at Consumer Day in the state every year.
