Delhi Productivity Council in the first event of its golden jubilee year, in association with Delhi Transco Ltd., Solar Energy Centre, MNRE GOI and NSIC organised a two-day national seminar on ?Solar Energy Development: Need of the Hour? on April 3. The seminar was inaugurated by Smt. Sheila Dikshit, Chief Minister of Delhi, at the Constitution Club.

Smt. Dikshit emphasised that energy efficiency and renewable energy sources would need to be searched and harnessed together not only to overcome the power shortage but also to conserve the alarmingly depleting conventional resources of energy. Delhi should emerge as a greener city not only for the greenery of parks and gardens but also due to the paradigm shift to green energy. Amongst green energy sources like tidal and wind, solar energy is the only one available in plenty in the NCT region with full scope of its utilisation by the homes, high-rise buildings, hospitality, health and care sectors and industries. Government has issued special incentives and also made mandatory the use of solar water heating to encourage larger use of this source. She gave the example that electricity consumption is very high in the domestic sector. The per capita electric power consumption in Delhi is almost 50 per cent higher than the national average, resulting from higher use of air-conditioner, geysers, washing machines, ovens, food processor, refrigerators, etc. in homes.

In his welcome address Shri Sudarshan Sareen, president, Delhi Productivity Council (DPC) appreciated Smt. Sheila Dikshit and Shri Santosh Bagrodia for their support to the seminar and future programmes of DPC during its golden jubilee year. Shri K.S. Maheshwari, Executive Director, Delhi Productivity Council gave a detailed account of the activities.

Shri Santosh Bagrodia, MP, Chairman Parliamentary Standing Committee on Industry, Shri Prabhat Kumar, former Cabinet Secretary, GOI & former Governor Jharkhand, Dr H.P. Kumar, CMD, NSIC, Dr Chandrapal, former Secretary, Ministry of MSME, GOI and Shri N.P. Singh, Executive Director, Delhi Transco Ltd, also addressed the seminar.
