What a marvelous progress the CPI(M) led Left Front Government has made in education after 30 years rule in West Bengal! The position of illiteracy and primary education in the state is just one step ahead of Bihar.

The number of boys and girls in the age group of 6 to 14 years is 6,64,000 in West Bengal, whereas the number of same group in Bihar is 23,15,000.

When the NDA-led Central Government had started the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan project under the Human Resource Development Ministry it had been decided that where there are 25 children between the age of 6 to 14 years, an Education Centre would be started.

The Review Committee of the concerned ministry has now reported that in the year 2006-2007 a target of 47,71,395 children to bring at any such Education Centre had been fixed, but in practice only 25,24,203 children could be brought, which is just 52.90 per cent of the total target.  By Basudeb Pal
