Hasn'tthe time come for the world to unite and tell the United States that its hegemony is not acceptable any longer and that its deliberate lies will no longer be tolerated?
Right from the time of Eisenhower?Dulles, the United States has been on a killing spree, knowing that it is not accountable to anybody, not even the United Nations which in all these years has tamely submitted to US pressures. And in this, it has had its chamchas both France and the United Kingdom, not to mention Taiwan, which then represented China in the UN Security Council. It helped divide Korea; believing that if Vietnam turns communist, then, one by one, all the South East Asian nations will fall to communism like a house of cards, it turned against Vietnam and was responsible for the murder of the then President of South Vietnam.
In President Nixon'stime matters turned worse, with his Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger ordering carpet bombing of little Cambodia, a neutral country, for 14-long months resulting in the recorded deaths of 600,000 innocent Cambodians, keeping that a secret from the US Congress. The usual excuse was that the United States was making Asia safe for democracy. Vietnam posed no threat to the US but between 1956 and 1975?a period of nineteen years?more than a million Vietnamese were killed. Now, on the Big Lie that Iraq was storing up Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) the United States has been responsible for the killings of thousands of Iraqi people even as it is trying to pitch the Shias against the Sunnis in a fratricidal war of giant proportions.
The US media is embedded with the Administration and has been responsible for deliberately spreading lies to fool the world. The truth has now been stated in a book: American Theocracy: The Perils and Politics of Radical Religion, Oil and Borrowed Money by an American: Kevin Phillips.
Two points raised by him are extremely relevant. One is that America is out to put a stranglehold on oil-producing countries, considering that oil wells will get depleted in another three to four decades. It is well to remember that the United States is the largest consumer of oil. Even as recently as 1950?half a century ago? Americans were consuming more than one-third of the world'senergy output and nearly half the world'soil supplies. The figure has changed dramatically for the worse. What the US now wants is to capture all lands in the Middle East which have oil stocks. Iraq is one such country. Iran is another. Iraq has been by now all but destroyed. Iran is going to be the next victim of US avarice.
A former UN weapons inspector claims in his new book Target Iran that US Special Forces are already operating inside Iran and that others are training Kurdish and other Azeri separatist groups to revolt against Teheran when the moment comes. The author, Scott Ritter, speaks from inside knowledge. The US media is hand in gloves with the US administration in spreading lies. Wholesale murder gets unreported as when American soldiers killed ?thousands? of captured Taliban fighters in Mazahr-e-Sharif, the very same people the US once trained and armed to the teeth to get Soviet influence in Afghanistan ousted. When Arab news channels like Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabia went on to tell the truth they were damned by the former US Defence Secretary, a hawk even worse than Henry Kissinger for being ?vicious, inaccurate and inexcusable?.
To spread lies, the United States has even gone to the extent of setting up an organisation?the American Middle East Partnership Initiative?which is willing to give any Arab entrepreneur $ five million provided he can set up ?independent? Arab newspapers, radio stations and tv channels to propagate US lies. America is willing to go to any extent to pull the wool over the eyes of people not just in the Middle East but all over the world. What we are witnessing are two simultaneous programmes: One, to capture sources of oil and gas and the other to fight Islam in what Christian fundamentalists in America call the ?Bible Land?.
A new crusade is on: According to a British newspaper, The Independent, ?the real problem the Arabs now face is that their lands have been over-run and effectively occupied by western armies? and that, pro rata ?there are now about 22 times more western soldiers in Muslim lands than there were at the time of the crusades?. Iraq, of course, is ravaged. Its economy is in shambles. Inflation in Iraq is rising about 33 per cent. Most of Iraqi industry, infrastructure and utilities have been either totally destroyed or badly damaged.
And what is the US has in mind? Control over Iraqi oil. Iraqi oil had been completely nationalised in 1975 by Saddam Hussain. He and his close colleagues have all been killed or hanged. At 115 billion barrels, Iraq has the third largest proven oil reserves in the world which is eyed by the US greedily. According to knowledgeable sources, it also has vast, untapped oil reserves in its western desert estimated to be anywhere between 100 to 200 billion barrels. Natural gas reserves are estimated at about 3.2 trillion cubic meters. About the same thing can be said about gas reserves in Iran, which the US is anxious to capture.
Talk of Iran going on for nuclear weaponry is all rubbish. Even if it were true, there is no reason why Iran should not go its way when Pakistan is free to make as many nuclear bombs and delivery planes it wants. The US wants both Iraq and Iran to come under its thumb. That is the plain and simple truth, and never mind if Iraq has slid from its earlier rank of 50 to its present rank of 126 in the UNDP'sHuman Development Index. It is Iraqi oil cruelty beyond any imagination, but such is the US power that practically every country?including Arab ones?prefer to maintain silence. In the United States, the media voice is being steadily muzzled apart from the fact that the print media is dying a slow death in America. In a way it suits the US administration, which wants to capture Iran with its 940 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves, the second largest after Russia?s.
India wants that gas badly which is why American pressures on Teheran must be resisted strongly. America has no use for friends if they have an independent outlook. And the US will always be backed by Britain, no matter how evil American intentions are. The aim is to survive at any cost and for London, closeness to Washington is all that matters. Principles are for the birds. For Tony Blair it does not matter what price Iraqis are now paying for resisting the US. What counts is power?and survival.
