Former general secretary of Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), Padmakar Ghate passed away in Manga-lore on September 10. He was 78. He had not been keeping well for the last few years. He was taking rest at his residence in Mangalore. He was cremated in Mangalore on September 11. Prominent among those who participated in the cremation included Shri A. Venkatraman, president, Karanataka state BMS, Shri D.K. Sadashiv, state general secretary, Shri R. Venugopalan, former BMS national president and thousands of Sangh and other organisations? workers.

Born on June 23, 1927, in Surat, Padmakar Ghate had been a Sangh Swayamsevak since childhood. After completing law graduation, he became a Sangh Pracharak in 1947. He joined the trade union activities in 1954. After sometime, when the BMS was founded, he became its full time worker and in 1963 he became its Karnataka state general secretary. He played a key role in shaping the BMS work in Karnataka. He also represented BMS at International Labour Organisation (ILO) meets in 1978, 1979, 1984 and 1985. He also addressed the World Federation of Trade Union (WFTU) convention held in Moscow in 1990. He became the BMS national general secretary in 1985.
