Rashtra Sevika Samiti and Mangayar Mangalam organised a mathru-sammelan (women'smeet) at S.T. Hindu College to celebrate the birth centenary of Laxmibai Kelkar. The programme was conceived to stablise the psychology of Indian feminine minds dominated by Western civilisation and remove the current craze for foreign culture, which taints feminine values that preserve the past glory of Indian culture and heritage. Smt. Bala Rajkumar lighted the thiruvilakku. Smt. Swarnambika Chidambaram sang the prayer song. Smt. Prema Kumaraswamy, district secretary of Rashtra Sevika Samiti, delivered the welcome address. .
Explaining the motive of the meet, Smt. Gowri Tulsi, district secretary of the Mangayar Mangalam, said that the meet was not a challenge to the society in the name of feminism. ?In the name of feminism, the female offspring of the Macaulay'ssystem of education has inculcated dubious sentiments on the roots of Indian culture. The Sevika Samiti and the Mangayar Mangalam are determined to promote equal participation of women in social uplift programmes by sowing seeds of the cultural values among younger generation?, she said. Smt. Geeta Ravindran, who inaugurated the meet, said that so far 387 women'smeet had been organised all over the country to strengthen the spiritual and traditional responsibilities of women. She said that 4,70,500 households in the country had been contacted for this purpose. Smt. Rengabai Sadhasivan presided over the meet.
