For the communists Hinduism is an opium which intoxicates the masses of Bharat. This is exactly the reason why they have been opposing any movement on the part of Hindus to unite themselves. Not only have the commies turned a blind eye to the political, social and cultural threats faced by the Hindu majority, but have also attacked the Hindu organisations when they take up genuine issues faced by the Hindus including conversions, Ram Temple construction etc.

But when it comes to wooing the Christians and Muslims of Kerala, the CPM has no qualms. It was the communist Government of E.M.S. Namboothripad, in the fifties, which allotted an exclusive district for the Muslims namely Malappuram. This district has now become a safe haven for Jehadi elements from all over Bharat and is being considered a ?mini Pakistan?. Be it the Mumbai Blast, Gatkopar Blast, Gujarat Riots or Coimbatore blast, there is always a Malappuram connection. It was the late E.K. Nayanar led CPM government of 1996-2001 which allotted the maximum number of self financing professional and B.Ed. Colleges to Christian and Muslim managements.

The present CPM State leadership led by State secretary Pinaray Vijayan has outbeated all his predecessors. Slyness has given way to openness. He inaugurated the Markazhu annual Convention of Kanthapuram Islamic Centre and shared dais with the Kanthapuram Musaliar. He declared that CPM is not opposed to Religion and Religious beliefs (Marx and Lenin may turn in their graves) but is opposed to communalisation of the majority community. He called upon the Muslims and Christians to join the CPM in large numbers.

This move of the CPM is part of a calculated strategy to get the 48% Muslim and Christian votes in the assembly polls scheduled in 2006. The CPM is euphoric of it winning 18 out of the 20 Lok Sabha seats in the 2004 polls, even defeating the Muslim League candidate in the Muslim Heart land of Manjeri. Moreover the CPM feels that with efforts for NSS-SNDP unity going on, a major chunk of the Nair-Ezhava votes which it was getting may be lost, and hence this move to woo the minorities (who are actually the majority).

For the Hindus of Kerala, the CPM has always been a beacon light against the political, social and monetary power of the minorities and hence the support they got, since they felt that the Congress and Muslim League led U.D.F. was basically anti-Hindu. Now with the CPM also wooing the minorities, the Hindus of Kerala have to think much ahead of the NSS-SNDP unity to protect Hinduism in the birth place of Jagadguru Adi Shankara.
