It was perhaps for the first time that more than one hundred educated Muslim men and women assembled at a function, as part of the awareness campaign organised by the Ima Welfare Society at Jamia Nagar in New Delhi, were eager to talk to Indresh Kumar, the RSS Sah-Sampark Pramukh. They agreed with the RSS leader that conflicts did not arise because of religion but cropped up due to mental attitude and language.
Shri Indresh Kumar explained his point by citing very simple examples. He said that it is universally taught that we should respect our parents. Despite that, most of the children leave their parents alone in their old age or else fight with them. He maintained that some people had become terrorists because of a wrong mental attitude. Citing the example of Kashmir, he pointed out that during the last 15 years, more than 40,000 civilians had been killed, 8,000 women had been rendered widows and over 15,000 children had become orphans. It happened, he said, because of a wrong mental attitude and language of our neighbour who does not want peace in this region. All the participants agreed with Indreshji that India is the only country among the 300 countries of the world where everyone has equal rights.
The main force behind the function was Smt. Shahin Khan, who is a teacher in Delhi. Smt. Nafisa Hussain, member, National Commission for Women, emphasised the need to educate the Muslim women on their legal rights and also about the mehar, which is generally decided by their parents and about which the women remain unaware. In times of need, she fails to get the desired amount of mehar decided at the time of her wedding.
Smt. Mridula Sinha, Chair-person, Central Social Welfare Board, appealed to the people not to discriminate between boys and girls and provide the girls equal opportunities for progress. Smt. Simi Jain, Chairperson, Delhi Social Welfare Advisory Board, Smt Digvijay Dixit, secretary BJP Mahila Morcha and Santosh Taneja, Sah-Sampark Pramukh of Delhi, were among the other prominent dignitaries who also shared the dais.
