“The President Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee have dreamed to make India a developed nation by 2020. Young students have the strength to fulfill this dream and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has the quality to provide them an able and efficient leadership,” said former chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and MP, Dr K. Kasturirangan inaugurating the 49th national convention of ABVP held in Ahmedabad recently.

RSS Sarkaryavah, Mohanrao Bhagwat, Sah-sarkaryavah Shri Madandas, Gujarat Prant Pracharak Shri Mohan Vaidya, Prant Sanghchalak, Shri Amritbhai Kariwala and Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, were among the prominent personalities who attended the convention.

Addressing the delegates ABVP president, Dr Kailas Sharma said today relations between teacher and students lacked the centuries old Guru-Shishya tradition of the country. He said the ABVP was working keeping in view the changing needs of the education sector and making students accountable to the nation.

The convention also passed three resolution demanding the government to put diplomatic pressure on the governments of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Burma to take similar military action against the terrorist training camps going on in their respective courtiers, as Bhutan has done.

After the convention a grand procession was taken out in Ahmedabad city, which later converged into a public meeting at Navarangpura. Speaking at the public meeting former general secretary, Ramesh Pappa said that the ghost of terrorism had haunted the whole world and the India had to fight its battle alone.

He urged the government to initiate the process to take back the land illegally occupied by Pakisatan and China for which Indian Parliament had already passed unanimous resolutions in 1962 and 1994. He also demanded stern action against the Islamic and Nexal terrorists who dream to disturb the integrity of the nation. General Secretary, K.N Raghunandan also addressed the meeting.

Formed on July 9, 1949 with a view to involve students in nation building, the ABVP is the largest student organisation of the world. It is active at 3120 places of the country with more than 11,24,000 members.

This year’s”Prof. Yashwantrao Kelkar Youth Award” was presented to Ashish Gautam of Divya Prem Seva Mission (Haridwar) for working amongst lepers. Presenting the award Gujarat Governor, Shri Kailashpati Mishra called upon students of the country to overcome inferiority complex and dedicate themselves to the national cause. Ashish Gautam pointed out that there were more than 23 lakh lepers in the country.
