The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has registered a suo motu ECIR (Enforcement Case Information Report) in connection with the CPM attack on ED officials on May 27, 2026. The development comes close on the heels of the ED’s letter to the Kerala State Police Chief as inquiry into the incident is already in progress.
Reportedly, 27 members who were accused in the police case have also been charged in the ECIR. The ED inquiry will examine the alleged conspiracy, financial transactions and information regarding money obtained for the crime. Reports suggest that the investigation could also be extended to CPM leaders.
The ED officials were attacked while they were returning from Pinarayi’s home after conducting raids at his residence in Thiruvananthapuram on May 27, in connection with the CMRL-Exalogic case concerning his daughter Veena Vijayan.
Police have registered a case alleging that the officials were prevented from discharging their duties and were attacked.
The ED inquiry is being conducted under the PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002), along with the attempt-to-murder charge.
The agency alleges that the accused prevented its officials from taking steps to trace money allegedly amassed through the CMRL-Exalogic fraud. According to the ED, the accused in the attack case were helping the accused in the CMRL-Exalogic case. The agency will therefore examine the alleged illegal financial transactions and the conspiracy behind the attack.
The ED inquiry is likely to be extended to CPM leaders. The agency intends to send summons to the accused after gathering more evidence. The inquiry is expected to cover not only those who allegedly took a direct role in the attack, but also those who may have been involved in the alleged conspiracy.
All accused in the police case have also been charged in the ED case. The move is being seen as significant, with the inquiry into financial transactions and the alleged conspiracy in connection with the attack on ED officials potentially reaching CPM leaders.
Meanwhile, the Kerala High Court has been reviewing a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a CBI probe into the case.
Meanwhile, CM V.D. Satheeshan stated on September 9 that the ED’s letter contains serious matters and that the law will take its own course. He alleged that the CPM is keen to justify the faults.
Satheeshan said action would be taken on the ED letter after examining the legal aspects and that politics would not be a consideration in the matter.
He said political parties collect funds from individuals and companies, but added that the CMRL-Exalogic case is different and serious.
Political observers and people in Kerala are now awaiting the CBI inquiry. The issue is considered significant as the case has interstate and international links.
