Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir have received a significant boost in their fight against terrorism and other criminal activities with the deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This innovative technology is being used to track wanted individuals including terrorists and their Over Ground Workers (OGW) and other criminals.

Marking a step forward in smart policing, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have implemented a cutting-edge AI Based facial recognition system at the Navyug Tunnel Qazigund. This area is strategic in sense that it serves as an entry and exit point for the Kashmir Valley.

The AI system part of a wider police skill development and modernisation is installed in Kulgam District of South Kashmir. This crucial route will now be monitored for individuals involved in criminal activities like absconding terrorists, supporting terrorists, habitual offenders, drug peddlers, over ground workers, and banned members of the banned organisation. The deployment of this AI technology signifies a commitment to enhancing public safety and effectively combat crime in Jammu and Kashmir.

Talking to a news media agency, the IGP of Kashmir Zone, VK Birdi said, “The Kashmir Valley is connected to the Jammu region through a tunnel and given the security situation, we need to monitor it closely. We want to track movements of individuals involved in anti-national activities who cross the tunnel from Srinagar and Jammu and back.

We have implemented this technology in Kulgam district at the tunnel. This AI System recognises faces. When we have photographs of individuals involved in various activities, this technology helps us identify those elements and it will assist greatly in apprehending fugitives.”

The system functions with two police teams, one stationed near the tunnel, and the other managing police control room, where dozens of special cameras are installed to scan faces and match them with the stored data. If a match is found, then the system beeps and the search teams is alerted to apprehend the individual. The police personnel handling the control room are fully trained for the task.

This system is user friendly and highly accurate. It operates under a well-defined program Police and other security agencies have input data of individuals with criminal and terrorist background into the system. Their past records and photographs have already been stored. The system also contains data on missing and wanted vehicles.
