Delhi Police has de-notified Jantar Mantar as a designated venue for protests and demonstrations, replacing it with three alternative locations — Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in East Delhi — in an administrative measure based on recommendations made by a committee constituted by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on October 12.

The order, issued by Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar, partially modifies the earlier Order dated April 28, 2022. The police have stated that detailed and revised standard operating procedures (SOPs) for organising protests at the three designated venues will be issued separately.

According to the notification, the MHA had constituted a committee to examine suitable alternative venues where citizens could exercise their right to organise protests and demonstrations. Following the committee’s recommendations, Jantar Mantar was removed from the list of designated protest sites.

The decision comes amid CJP’s calls for another round of protests in Delhi to keep the SIR issue alive and, in the process, discredit India’s robust electoral system.

Amid these developments, CJP appears to be keeping the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) issue alive, with its latest move pointing towards another round of agitation, potentially ‘Protest 3.0’, against the Election Commission of India (ECI).

On October 12, CJP leaders returned to Parliament Street Police Station to demand a date for their proposed protest at Jantar Mantar, two days after Delhi Police detained its activists during the October 10 agitation. The organisation also appealed to supporters to join further protests and issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the police.
