SHIMLA: Tension flared outside the Himachal Pradesh Assembly on the sixth day of the ongoing session as Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members staged a massive protest on December 3, alleging chaos in the state’s education system, mounting unemployment, and government apathy toward student concerns.
Hundreds of ABVP supporters assembled at Zorawar Stadium and attempted to march toward the Vidhan Sabha to lay siege to it. Police had erected heavy barricades and restricted movement beyond the stadium, resulting in a three-hour standoff.

When protesters tried to break through the barricades, police used mild force to disperse them. ABVP Nagar Mantri Gaurav Kumar accused the state government of failing to address critical issues, including the appointment of permanent vice-chancellors, delays in evaluation, inadequate research facilities, and the absence of a clear employment policy.
Protesters alleged that the government continues to offer “empty assurances,” leaving students to suffer amid administrative disorder on campuses.
The demonstration came just two days after ABVP workers were allegedly placed under house arrest during the Chief Minister’s event in Dharamshala, an action strongly condemned by the student organisation. Addressing the crowd, Gaurav Kumar said the government’s indifference has left the future of the youth uncertain. He warned that if prompt action is not taken on education and employment issues, the agitation will intensify across Kangra district and the entire state.
A large number of ABVP workers from Kangra had gathered for the march from Zorawar Stadium to the Assembly, but were stopped by police along the way.
