The nation is devastated and reeling under the horrific tragedy of the gangrape case occurred in a private medical college at Durgapur, West Bengal. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has uttered an irresponsible and insensible statement with respect to the case. In a shocking assertion she has tried to shift the responsibility on the college security and the administration. She questioned that how a 23 year-old student managed to leave the campus late at night. She thus clearly blamed the college administration for the crime and attempted to decouple herself or the West Bengal government from the responsibility of ensuring stringent law and order across the state.
“She was studying in a private medical college. Whose responsibility is it? How did she come out at 12.30 at night?”, Mamata Banerjee asked in her maiden remarks to the media after the terrific incident. She further accused the private medical college for not taking care of their students and criticized the college for not regulating the “culture at night”. “They should not be allowed to come out. They have to protect themselves. It is a forest area”, Banerjee said. These statement by the Chief Minister of West Bengal is a clear testament to victim blaming.

BJP hits out at Banerjee’s irresponsible statements
The BJP has hit out at the West Bengal Chief Minister for relentlessly indulging in victim blaming instead of working towards rendering justice to the victim. “Shameless @MamataOfficial a blot on womanhood, even more for being a CM. After RG Kar and Sandeshkhali, now this horrific case and instead of justice, she blames the victim!” BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said in a post on the X social media platform.
“A Chief Minister who tells girls not to go out at night, rather than ensuring their safety, has no moral right to stay in office. People now realize they have reposed faith in an anarchist, heartless Mamata. She must resign and be held accountable under law”, Gaurav Bhatia further added.

Meanwhile, Shehzad Poonawalla reiterated that the Chief Minister of Bengal “blames the bheti(daughter) and defends the Balatkari(rapist)”. “Time & again: RG Kar, Sandeshkhali, Park Street – this has been done. Will the outrage lobby who was shouting yesterday – Supriya Shrinate, Priyanka Vadra, Rahul Gandhi etc. open their mouths now?” Shehzad Poonawalla further questioned.
A second-year medical student hailing from Odisha was studying at a private medical college in Durgapur, 170 kms away from the capital city of Kolkata. She was gangraped on October 11 night, when she stepped out with her friend. A group of men allegedly dragged her to a hidden place and was raped. The survivor is currently under medical treatment.
The Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Charan Manjhi has spoken to the victim’s father and has assured all assistance in the path of seeking justice. “The Odisha Chief Minister has spoken to me. The administration is helping us”, said the survivor’s father. The West Bengal police have captured three suspects related to the crime and says that the case is under investigation.
