ABVP emerges as the voice of Gen-Z across Indian campuses

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) is fast emerging as the dominant voice of Gen-Z across Indian campuses, with student victories and growing influence reflecting a generational shift in campus politics. Positioning itself as both nationalist and youth-centric, the ABVP has struck a chord with students by combining ideological appeal with grassroots activism, making it a formidable force in university elections nationwide

The outcome of the latest student union elections across India has made one thing clear: the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) remains the most powerful force in campus activism. With commanding victories in prestigious institutions such as Delhi University and Hyderabad Central University, the organization has not only strengthened its existing presence but also expanded its influence into traditionally challenging campuses, proving its unmatched reach among students.

What makes these results stand out is the depth of student support and the scale of organizational performance. In the span of two days, ABVP secured historic wins at two of the country’s most high-profile universities – Delhi University, the nation’s largest and most diverse campus, and Hyderabad University, long seen as a tough battleground. Together, these victories illustrate how ABVP has been able to strike a chord with Gen-Z by addressing their aspirations in education, leadership, and constructive nation-building.

Historic Victory at Delhi University

At Delhi University, ABVP’s presidential candidate Aryan Mann secured victory with an unprecedented margin of 16,196 votes. It is the second-highest margin in the university’s five-decade-long electoral history. The record margin of 19,039 votes also belongs to an ABVP candidate, Akshit Dahiya. Alongside the presidency, ABVP swept the secretary and joint secretary posts, further strengthening its foothold in the capital’s premier institution.

Clean Sweep at Hyderabad University

In Hyderabad University, ABVP went a step further, registering a clean sweep by winning all major posts, including president, vice-president, general secretary, joint secretary, cultural secretary, and sports secretary. What made this victory even more remarkable was the fact that despite Telangana being under Congress rule, the Congress-affiliated NSUI performed so poorly that it polled fewer votes than the “None of the Above” (NOTA) option. The outcome highlighted the widening disconnect between NSUI and ground realities on campuses. Historically, Hyderabad University, Punjab University, and Gauhati University have been considered difficult terrains for ABVP, making these victories highly significant.

Winning Streak Across India

This success is not an isolated coincidence. As ABVP completes 75 years since its foundation, its continued winning streak across campuses from Punjab and Delhi to Patna, Uttarakhand, Assam, and other universities nationwide. It reflects both its pan-Indian character and its deep roots in student issues. The victories are the result of a combination of ideological clarity, positive interventions in academic and campus-related matters, and the tireless commitment of its student volunteers.

Gen-Z Endorses Constructive Nationalism

For today’s Gen-Z, ABVP’s message of constructive nationalism and its ability to link student politics with real issues of education and youth aspirations have struck a powerful chord. The outcome of these elections is increasingly being seen as a mandate for positive and creative nation-building.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s recent appeal to Gen-Z in the name of “saving the Constitution” appeared to carry the same undertones of negativity that are often associated with political instability and violence in India’s neighbouring countries like Nepal and Bangladesh. In contrast, ABVP’s victories across campuses signal that young Indians are rejecting the politics of pessimism, divisiveness, and dynastic privilege.

Endorsement from National Leadership

Senior BJP leaders echoed this sentiment. BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santosh described the Delhi University results as a “resounding Gen-Z victory for ABVP”, while Union Home Minister Amit Shah hailed it as proof of the youth’s “unwavering belief in the idea of nation-first.” Meanwhile, NSUI’s attempts to allege “vote rigging” and tampering of EVMs failed to resonate with students, who turned out in record numbers.Over 1.5 lakh at Delhi University alone, from diverse states and backgrounds, making the result a credible reflection of the youth’s mood.

ABVP Beyond Elections

It is important to recognise that student union elections act as a litmus test for youth sentiment in India. ABVP’s steady growth in membership, which has now crossed the 5-million mark, and its presence in every district of the country, demonstrate its unmatched reach and influence. Even in universities where student union elections are not held, ABVP has consistently engaged students through initiatives around education, social causes, and youth empowerment, thereby positioning itself as much more than just an electoral organization.

Nation-Building Through Student Leadership

ABVP’s real strength lies in its ability to shape future leaders by inculcating discipline, responsibility, and a spirit of service among students. Unlike organizations limited to rhetoric, ABVP has continuously provided a platform where students from diverse backgrounds can contribute to the nation’s progress. From addressing local campus issues to taking up broader social challenges, ABVP has ensured that its activism remains rooted in constructive and solution-oriented politics.

For over seven decades, ABVP has balanced tradition and modernity, drawing young Indians closer to their cultural heritage while equipping them with a forward-looking vision. Its campaigns, whether around academic reforms, career opportunities, social service, or civic responsibility, have succeeded in molding students not only as leaders of tomorrow but also as responsible citizens of today.

The latest victories underline the reality that ABVP is India’s most mature and contemporary student organization. It’s deeply rooted in national values yet fully attuned to the aspirations of a new, dynamic generation.
