Uttar Pradesh has secured the top spot in the country by providing the highest number of solar energy connections under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Energy Minister A.K. Sharma announced that consistent efforts of Uttar Pradesh in promoting renewable energy have made it a national leader in solar power adoption, creating a benchmark for other states to follow. According to official data, Uttar Pradesh distributed 27,771 solar connections in July and a further 28,029 connections in August 2025, making it the state with the maximum number of beneficiaries under the central scheme. These figures highlight not only the rapid pace of solar installations but also the growing awareness among citizens about the benefits of renewable energy.
The initiative has picked up pace across both urban and rural regions. This has helped households cut down on electricity costs while supporting environmental sustainability. Minister Sharma noted that this success aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of providing affordable, accessible, and sustainable energy to every home in India.

The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched in 2024, is a flagship scheme aimed at promoting rooftop solar energy across the country. Under the scheme, households can install solar panels on their rooftops and generate electricity for personal use. Families are entitled to receive up to 300 units of free electricity every month. This will reduce their dependence on conventional power supply and lower household electricity bills.
Financial assistance, subsidies, and simplified approval processes are key highlights of this program. It also encourages surplus energy to be fed back into the grid and ensures that households can earn from excess production. Uttar Pradesh’s proactive approach to implementing the scheme has allowed it to take a leading role in expanding its reach.
Over the past few years, Uttar Pradesh has been focusing on expanding its renewable energy footprint. The state has introduced simplified application systems, strong monitoring mechanisms, and awareness campaigns to ensure that beneficiaries, especially from economically weaker sections, can avail themselves of the benefits.
Minister A.K. Sharma stated that this leadership shows the state government’s commitment towards energy security and self-reliance. He further added that the widespread adoption of solar power will not only reduce the financial burden on citizens but also contribute to environmental protection by cutting down carbon emissions.
While the rooftop solar program remains a key priority, Uttar Pradesh is also expanding in other segments of renewable energy. Large-scale solar parks, public-private partnerships, and integration of solar power with agricultural practices are being actively promoted. This comprehensive approach ensures that both households and industries benefit from renewable sources of energy.
As per recent reports, more than 62,000 solar connections have been initiated in just two months under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, reflecting the increasing acceptance of solar energy in day-to-day life.
Experts believe that Uttar Pradesh’s achievement is a model for other states to replicate. By combining strong administrative support, awareness programs, and financial incentives, the state has shown how renewable energy adoption can be accelerated at the grassroots level. Energy analysts note that if other states follow a similar trajectory, India can rapidly achieve its ambitious renewable energy targets of 500 GW capacity by 2030, with solar energy playing the central role.
Citizens at the Center of Transformation
Beyond statistics, the most important aspect of this success lies in the empowerment of citizens. Families across Uttar Pradesh now have access to reliable and affordable electricity, especially in semi-urban and rural areas where supply was often inconsistent. The scheme also promotes energy awareness, helping people understand the financial and environmental benefits of solar power. Farmers, small shop owners, and households in districts such as Agra, Varanasi, and Lucknow have already reported significant savings on electricity bills. Additionally, many households are now able to generate surplus energy.
India has committed to becoming a global leader in renewable energy, and Uttar Pradesh’s achievement strengthens this vision. The shift towards solar energy directly supports India’s pledge at international climate forums to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and cut carbon emissions.
By leading in solar connections, Uttar Pradesh is not only fulfilling its domestic energy needs but also contributing towards India’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement. With the pace of adoption showing no signs of slowing down, Uttar Pradesh aims to further expand its solar capacity in the coming months. The government plans to extend financial incentives, simplify regulatory processes, and ensure that every eligible household under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana benefits from free electricity.
Energy Minister A.K. Sharma concluded by affirming that Uttar Pradesh’s journey in solar energy is a long-term mission aimed at empowering citizens, advancing environmental protection, and positioning Uttar Pradesh as a guiding example for the nation.
