Conversation between Prime Minister Modi and President Putin comes at a strategically crucial juncture, when the geopolitical spotlight is on the US as the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and many other European leaders and NATO member countries are at Washington DC for a high-stake meeting with the US President Trump, to discuss the course of Russia-Ukraine conflict. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni are expected to be at Washington to support the Ukrainian cause and urge President Trump for more concessions in favour of Ukraine, prior to reaching a conclusion on the three year-old Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Putin said his country is committed to ending the war, but the conflict’s “primary causes” must be eliminated for an agreement to be long-lasting.
Putin also warned Ukraine and the European Union against throwing a “wrench in the works” and cautioned against attempts to use “backroom dealings to conduct provocations to torpedo the nascent progress,” as per Al Jazeera.
Trump praised the “extremely productive meeting”, in which he said “many points were agreed to”. He said there is a “very good chance of getting there” – referring to a ceasefire – but conceded that there remain sticking points with Moscow, including at least one “significant” one.
He cautioned that it’s “ultimately up to them” – referring to Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. “There’s no deal until there’s a deal,” he said.
The Russian president phone call to PM Modi also hails the time-tested New Delhi-Moscow relationship at every critical scenario. Meanwhile, Russian President Putin is expected to visit India later this year for an annual bilateral summit marking the strengthening India-Russia bonhomie amidst all the geopolitical upheavals.
