Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on the Opposition, highlighting a controversial clause in the Delhi Municipal Act that permitted authorities to imprison sanitation workers for up to a month if they failed to report for duty without prior notice.
“There was a law for my safai mitras which said if they didn’t show up for work, they could be sent to jail. These are the kinds of harsh laws they created and maintained,” Modi said, terming the rule as “draconian” and “exploitative.”
The Prime Minister said that his government was determined to abolish such unjust provisions. “It is Modi who is working to dismantle these kinds of laws,” he declared to a cheering crowd.
Shifting his focus to broader political themes, PM Modi accused the Opposition of hypocrisy, saying their public gestures of reverence for the Constitution contradicted their past actions.
“These people who dance while holding the Constitution above their heads, this is how they disrespect it. This is how they trampled on the sentiments of Baba Saheb Ambedkar,” Modi alleged.
His remarks come amid an intensifying political tussle between the BJP and the Opposition over Ambedkar’s legacy, social justice, and constitutional protections.
During his visit, PM Modi also inaugurated two key National Highways projects in Delhi, the Dwarka Expressway (Delhi section) and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II).
He hailed the projects as transformative for the capital city, saying they would turn Delhi into a model of Viksit Bharat (Developed India).
“I know how difficult it is for the new BJP government to bring Delhi out of the ever-mounting troubles of the past. However, I am confident that the team you have chosen in Delhi will work hard and pull the city out of the problems it has been suffering for decades,” the Prime Minister remarked.
Modi also criticised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress governments of the past, accusing them of ruining Delhi through poor governance and neglect.
