Guwahati: We are evicting Miya Muslims only, not the indigenous people, said Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. He said we are evicting those Miya-Muslims who have encroached on the forest land and VGR-PGR land. For the tribal people who are living in forest areas they are eligible to get land rights according to law. But the Miya population doesn’t have the right to live in the forest land. We have already given them so much of Char (riverine area) land. No Assamese, tribal, Bengali, Bihari people have ever gone to encroach Char land, so why did the Miya people come and encroach forest land in Golaghat, Sibasagar and other districts? the CM said.
He further informed that the war continues, the fight continues and the effort to reclaim what belongs to us continues. CM Sarma informed that 50 plus hectares of land has been cleared in Negheribeel area in Golaghat district. 320 illegal structures have been demolished.
Meanwhile Bangladeshi origin Muslim student union AAMSU has organised a large protest in Dhubri on 11th August against the eviction drives by the state government. Reacting to it, CM Sarma said that if they try to create an unwanted situation, there will be more evictions in the state.
On the other hand, the public in Jorhat district seized a bus where 45 suspected Miya travelled to the island district Majuli. On questioning about the purpose of visiting the Vaishnavite cultural hub, the suspected people said that some contractors have hired them for construction work, but failed to show any proof. Local police were informed and all of them were apprehended for further investigation. Locals said, the largest river island Majuli is a sacred place for the Sanatani Assamese and considered to be one of the safest places in Assam. But large scale migration of such suspicious Miya people has jolted the public. They requested the Assam CM to pay immediate attention to the serious matter and prevent such happenings.
