To celebrate the upcoming National Handloom Day on August 7, the Ministry of Textiles has launched the “Know Your Weaves” campaign, a week-long initiative aimed at fostering awareness and appreciation of Bharat’s diverse handloom weaving traditions. The campaign is being held from August 1 to 7 at the National Crafts Museum and Hastkala Academy in New Delhi.
The event was formally inaugurated on August 1, by Textiles Secretary Neelam Shami Rao in the presence of Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) Amrit Raj, Development Commissioner (Handlooms) Dr M Beena, and a host of faculty members, students, and textile experts.
Speaking at the launch, Rao highlighted the government’s continuous efforts to preserve India’s textile legacy. “This campaign aims not only to celebrate our traditions but to educate and inspire the younger generation to take pride in our cultural identity,” she said. Rao encouraged schools and colleges to actively participate in the campaign and explore India’s handwoven wealth firsthand.
The campaign showcases the craftsmanship behind India’s most cherished handlooms, including Banarasi, Chanderi, Pochampally Ikat, Kanjeevaram, and Bhujodi, through live weaving demonstrations, exhibitions, and interactive workshops. Master artisans from across the country have gathered at the venue to demonstrate traditional techniques, share stories, and interact with curious minds.
Each day of the event features special sessions on natural dyeing, loom operations, and weaving practices, alongside educational panels, quiz competitions, and storytelling installations using multimedia, archival footage, and personal narratives. The aim is to trace the evolution of India’s handloom industry while highlighting the deep cultural and social bonds embedded within it.
A unique highlight of the campaign is its youth outreach component. In partnership with educational institutions, the Ministry is conducting guided tours, interactive Q&A sessions, and on-the-spot contests to immerse students in India’s rich textile ecosystem. The initiative also includes curriculum-linked activities designed to encourage research and project-based learning about traditional Indian fabrics.
“Know Your Weaves” is being held as part of the broader “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” celebrations, which commemorate 75 years of India’s independence. The campaign aligns with the vision of ‘Vocal for Local’ and promotes India’s handloom sector as not just a cultural symbol but an economic lifeline for millions of artisans.
The Ministry hopes that the initiative will leave a lasting impression on the younger generation and help build a sustainable future for India’s handloom sector by fostering respect, visibility, and support for the weaving communities.
