Agnihotra yagya holds prime significance as a beneficent ritual in our hallowed Sanatan culture. It is the key sacramental procedure prescribed by Yajurveda. Its importance is underscored in all four Vedas. The word Agnihotra literally means offering to the Agni or fire. The Vedic concept of Agnihotra is in the context of this as a ritual of yagya, and yagya is regarded as a collaborative activity which benefits various participants—physically, mentally and spiritually. Agnihotra yagya is a specific type of yagya in which oblations are given to Agni, and these are in the form of offerings of pure natural substances like mango tree wood, cereals, dried fruits, ghee made from cow’s milk, aromatic and medicinal herbs, etc.
The Agnihotra yagya is a ritual which is devoted to purification of the atmosphere and all five primal elements of nature—air, earth, water, fire and ether. In this ritual, alongside offerings of the above-mentioned pure natural substances to fire, sacred hymns of the Vedas are chanted. This gives the more important spiritual dimension to Agnihotra as a yagya.
But Agnihotra is a scientific pollution mitigation action in which the subtle powers of the primordial element called ‘agni’ are called into action or invoked to release micro particles or nanoparticles of burnt beneficial substances indicated above. These fine particles have the potential of mitigating air pollution, water pollution, ether pollution and also the pollution of the other two primal elements of nature—earth and fire at a subtle level. It has been experimentally proven by scientists based in Germany that such pollution mitigation does take place. For example, the carbon monoxide content in the air is reduced; the level of carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide is also reduced due to Agnihotra yagya. Not only this, the fumes emanating from the yagya were found to destroy to the extent of 80 to 90 per cent harmful bacteria and viruses in the immediate vicinity.
Our scriptural texts specify that one litre of fumes emitted from Agnihotra yagya has the potential to purify 1 million litres of atmospheric air.
Talking of the concomitant benefits of Agnihotra yagya, purified air, ether, water, and other elements benefit all living beings—plants, animals and humans. They beneficially impact the bodies, minds and intellects of humans and animals. This enables them to lead healthier lives. Humans derive huge physical, mental and spiritual benefits from Agnihotra yagya, which enables them to lead healthier, happier and more fulfilling lives. Thus, the benefits accruing from this yagya, as borne out by tradition, are corroborated by modern scientific analysis and scientific scrutiny.
In the Vedic tradition, Agnihotra yagya has been extolled as the most sacred and elevating activity for humans, earning them huge temporal and spiritual merit. The sacred hymns of Vedas uttered during Agnihotra invoke the divine power of Ishwar to bring benefits manifold to its performer. It earns him virtue and showers benefits and bounties on all other participants in the activity. It is regarded as a most benevolent action because it is performed with an earnest prayer to the almighty for some desired material benefits which are delivered by the compassionate creator as a divine retribution for the munificent action of the yagya. The hymns of Yajurveda are replete with messages that extol the multiple benefits – both temporal and spiritual deriving from this yagya. As explained above, the beneficial action by the subtle spiritual power called Ishwar works at the nano level, impacting our body and mind and bringing us rewards bountifully. Ishwar is the most subtle entity in the universe, and being spiritual in nature, he is omnipotent because the more subtle an entity, the more powerful it is. Being omnipotent as well as omniscient, he has overwhelming power and control over nature, and Agnihotra yagya has been prescribed by Ishwar himself as a most virtuous action by his human subjects. Agnihotra yagya has been performed in the Vedic tradition to propitiate the munificent deities to fulfil noble human desires—both material and spiritual. It is a sublime activity that helps humans traverse the tumultuous journey of life with all its uncertainties and upheavals. It is, by far, the most materially virtuous and spiritually sublime activity that humans can perform.
We need to revive mass performance of Agnihotra Yagya for invoking munificent, higher divine powers to quell the storms of grave global problems afflicting the world today. We need to revive it to prevent the cataclysmic phenomena waiting to happen.
