In a sharp rebuke that has put Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on the defensive, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has categorically dismissed his sensational claims of electoral fraud in Karnataka, calling his allegations “baseless and misleading” and demanding greater responsibility from national leaders who wield enormous public influence.
Rahul Gandhi, still grappling with Congress’ dismal Lok Sabha results in Karnataka, had stirred controversy by alleging that “100 per cent fraud” was committed during the 2024 general election. He went so far as to declare that the Election Commission “allowed illegal voter manipulation” by unjustly adding and deleting names from voter lists — and dramatically warned that “We are behind you, you will not get away with this!”
But these rhetorical fireworks have now exploded in his own face. In an unusually direct response, the ECI has fact-checked and demolished his sweeping accusations point by point — armed with official records that show not a single appeal, objection or petition was filed by the Congress or any defeated candidates, either during or after the election.
ECI makes the facts clear
The Chief Electoral Officer of Karnataka has released detailed documents proving that the voter rolls were prepared with full transparency and that copies were given to all recognised parties, including the Congress.
Between the draft and final lists, nearly 9.18 lakh claims and objections were addressed — yet Rahul Gandhi’s party did not bother to file any formal complaint when they had the chance.

“It is shocking that leaders of national stature make unverified and threatening allegations against a Constitutional body,” an ECI spokesperson said, bluntly adding that the Congress’ silence during the due process exposes the political opportunism behind Rahul’s remarks.

The Commission further clarified that not a single losing Congress candidate has filed an election petition in court — the lawful way to contest disputed results — which raises questions about why Rahul Gandhi is resorting to provocative public statements instead of following legal remedies.
Siddaramaiah’s misplaced support
Adding to the political farce, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also backed Rahul’s allegations, claiming that the party had “proof” of massive irregularities. Ironically, even as he lent credibility to Rahul’s outburst, his own party’s state unit has failed to submit any formal evidence to the very institution they accuse of wrongdoing.
By endorsing this baseless narrative, Siddaramaiah has only fuelled confusion and distrust, raising the question: Should a sitting Chief Minister amplify unverified conspiracy theories instead of defending democratic institutions?
Irresponsible politics that damages democracy
It is clear now that Rahul Gandhi’s statements were not only reckless but also misleading, designed to shift blame for the Congress’ defeat rather than accept genuine political shortcomings. Worse, such irresponsible rhetoric chips away at the credibility of the Election Commission, which remains a globally respected Constitutional body that has conducted free and fair elections for decades.
In times when democracy itself faces cynicism and polarisation, the onus is on national leaders to strengthen, not slander, India’s institutions. By peddling dramatic allegations without so much as filing a single official complaint, Rahul Gandhi has shown an alarming disregard for the facts — and for the basic duty of a responsible opposition leader.
The Election Commission’s categorical rebuttal has left no doubt: the Congress’ leadership must answer not with slogans, but with evidence — or withdraw from making incendiary statements that mislead the public and weaken trust in the world’s largest democracy.
As Karnataka’s people watch this political theatre unfold, many will wonder: When will Rahul Gandhi learn that democracy cannot be protected by reckless blame games — but only by upholding truth, accountability, and the rule of law?
