In a disturbing incident that sparked communal tension during the ongoing Kanwar Yatra, a man was arrested on July 7 in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district for allegedly spitting on a ‘kanwar’ being carried by a woman pilgrim. The ‘kanwar’ is a sacred bamboo structure adorned by Shiva devotees as they undertake the annual pilgrimage to carry holy water from the Ganga to offer at Shiva temples.
The incident occurred in the Jansath area of Muzaffarnagar, a region currently bustling with Kanwar Yatra pilgrims. According to reports, the accused, identified as Shehzad, allegedly spat on the kanwar of a woman devotee, triggering immediate outrage among pilgrims and locals. The situation escalated briefly, with tensions simmering, before police swiftly intervened to prevent any untoward incident.
Police Intervene; Accused Arrested
Local police responded promptly and arrested Shehzad on the spot following complaints from pilgrims and bystanders. Superintendent of Police (Rural) Atul Srivastava confirmed the arrest, stating, “The accused has been taken into custody and legal proceedings are underway. We have filed a case under sections pertaining to promoting enmity between groups and causing deliberate insult to religious sentiments.”
SP Srivastava further added that the situation has been brought under control and police presence has been heightened to ensure that no further law and order issues arise during the high-footfall religious event.
False Claims of Mental Illness
While the incident stirred apprehension in the locality, Shehzad’s family has stepped forward, claiming that he has a history of mental instability. According to his relatives, Shehzad has been undergoing treatment for psychological issues for an extended period.
Police officials have stated that the accused’s mental health status will be verified through a formal medical examination before any additional legal action is pursued. Authorities have assured that due process will be followed while maintaining sensitivity to both legal and social concerns.
Security Tightened Amid Sensitivity of Kanwar Yatra
Given the enormous scale and emotional significance of the Kanwar Yatra, which attracts millions of devotees across northern India every year, the district administration has taken heightened security measures. Additional police forces have been deployed, surveillance increased, and continuous monitoring has been put in place to preempt any attempts to disturb communal harmony.
Senior police officials emphasised the need for calm, urging residents not to spread unverified information, particularly on social media, which could inflame tensions. “The situation is fully under control. We appeal to everyone to maintain peace and cooperate with the administration,” the Superintendent added.
Public Appeals for Restraint
District Magistrate and local officials have also issued public advisories requesting people to refrain from giving credence to rumors or reacting to provocative posts online. “We are closely monitoring both ground situations and digital spaces. Legal action will be taken against those who attempt to spread communal disharmony,” a senior official stated.
The Kanwar Yatra, an annual devotional journey for followers of Bhagwan Shiva, holds deep cultural and religious significance in the region. The Uttar Pradesh government has laid out extensive arrangements to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the pilgrimage. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to upholding law and order, emphasising that isolated incidents will be dealt with firmly and fairly.
