Sports Education: From sideline to centrestage

Unlike in the past, when sports was a sorry state of affairs, in today’s Bharat a new sports ecosystem has emerged in which our sports persons are pursuing sports academics, working on physical endurance and having a positive mindset even in adversity in modern sports universities

There was a time when choosing sports as a career meant one had limited options—often restricted to becoming a PTI in schools or hoping to get a Government job through the sports quota. But that time has long passed. In today’s Bharat, sports has evolved from being merely a passion or a recreational activity to a thriving professional field offering a multitude of career paths. Now, career prospects in sports are not confined to medal-winning performances alone. A whole ecosystem has emerged around sports that includes areas like Sports Sciences,

Management, Coaching, Physiotherapy, Media, Entrepreneurship and many more.

Flourishing Career

The scope of sports as a career is now vast and multifaceted. The traditional view that sports is only for athletes or those aspiring for Government jobs has been replaced with an understanding that sports is a complete industry in itself—requiring professionals at every level. There are now specialised domains such as sports rehabilitation centres, sports nutrition, fitness and strength training, coaching, and even business ventures like opening gyms or managing sports events. With a combination of education and training, one can now carve out a rewarding and respected place in this ever-expanding field.

One of the prominent sectors offering immense opportunities is Sports Academics. Students who pursue graduation, post-graduation, or doctoral degrees in Physical Education or Sports Sciences can go on to become Assistant Professors, Professors, and school teachers (TGT and PGT). Those who lean towards administration can aspire to roles such as Sports Officers, Assistant Directors, Directors of Sports, Deans, Registrars, and even Vice-Chancellors of universities. The demand for well-qualified professionals is increasing across schools, colleges, universities, and even in Government Departments such as

Civil Services (State PSCs and UPSC) and Defence Services..

Beyond education and administration, the field of sports coaching and training is flourishing. Whether as high-performance coaches, fitness trainers, or expert physiotherapists, these professionals play a critical role in shaping the success of athletes. Importantly, the knowledge and experience gained through Sports Education often equips individuals with the qualities needed to excel in competitive examinations and public service roles as well. Sports education fosters overall personality development, discipline, leadership, and decision-making skills—traits highly valued in all professional domains.

With the emergence of specialised Sports Sciences, the profession has further expanded into fields like Biomechanics, Physiology, Psychology, and Nutrition. Countries that have invested in Sports Science have seen direct results—dominating in Olympic medal tallies and international sports.

Game-Changing Entrepreneurs

India, however, still lags behind other economic powers in the application of Sports Sciences. To change this, we need to invest in education, infrastructure, and innovation. Encouragingly, many Sports Universities are being established across various States to address this gap. Simultaneously, entrepreneurship in the sports sector is booming. Fields such as Sports Technology, Sports Journalism, Nutrition, and Apparel Design are creating room for new businesses. Whether it’s developing performance-monitoring software, creating region-specific sportswear, or designing customised training  programmes, the demand for sports-based entrepreneurship is on a rapid rise. At the heart of this movement toward a sports-empowered Bharat stands the Sports University of Haryana, located in Rai, Sonipat. An initiative by the Government of Haryana, this university is strategically positioned just half an hour from Delhi-NCR, making it easily accessible for students across northern India. The university was founded with the aim of nurturing Haryana’s already rich pool of sporting talent, but its vision extends much further—it welcomes students from across India to pursue integrated growth in sports and academics.

Gone are the days when students had to choose between sports and education. At the Sports University of Haryana (SUOH), both go hand-in-hand. With a curriculum that blends academic rigour with practical experience, the university enables students to continue their sports training while earning recognised qualifications. For elite athletes, hybrid and flexible modes of learning are also available, allowing them to balance training schedules with their academic pursuits.

The establishment of the Sports University of Haryana marks a transformative chapter in India’s sports education journey. It offers a structured and dynamic platform for students to translate their interest in sports into lifelong careers. By merging academic insight with hands-on experience, the university is committed to producing industry-ready professionals equipped to meet global standards. The institution’s influence goes far beyond individual success stories—it contributes to India’s ambition of becoming a global sporting powerhouse by developing skilled professionals, enhancing grassroots programmes, and supporting high-performance sports.

In conclusion, the time has come for Bharat to fully embrace sports as a viable and promising career option. This will not only uplift the individual dreams of aspiring sportspersons and professionals but also pave the way for a healthier, more dynamic society. As sports and physical education gain momentum, the demand for Sports
Sciences and associated professions will rise—and with it, an explosion of entrepreneurial and employment opportunities.
