Amid escalating national security concerns and heightened tensions along the India-Pakistan border, the Government of Odisha has significantly ramped up surveillance and emergency preparedness across the state. In a series of coordinated measures, security protocols have been strengthened, tourist access to critical infrastructure has been restricted, and the leaves of senior administrative and police officials have been cancelled to ensure immediate availability for duty.
The developments come in the wake of increased drone sightings across the country and growing concern over the security of vital installations. While no direct threat to Odisha has been identified so far, the state government is proactively implementing preventive strategies to safeguard its strategic assets and maintain law and order.
Security Tightened at Hirakud Dam
One of the most significant moves under this enhanced security posture has been the imposition of a complete ban on tourist entry to the Hirakud Dam in Sambalpur district. Authorities announced the suspension of all visitor access to the site with immediate effect, citing precautionary measures aimed at protecting critical infrastructure.
Recognized as Asia’s longest earthen dam, the Hirakud Dam plays a pivotal role in Odisha’s irrigation, hydropower generation, and flood control systems. Given its strategic importance, the site is now under increased surveillance with advanced monitoring systems and 24/7 patrolling by heavily armed security personnel.
Security forces stationed at the dam have been equipped with modern weaponry, including Light Machine Guns (LMGs) and high-caliber rifles, marking a significant escalation in the site’s defense capabilities. Checkpoints have been established at all key access points, and public notices have been issued to ensure compliance with the temporary restrictions.
A senior official emphasized, “This decision has been taken in the larger interest of public safety and national security. Though there is no confirmed intelligence of an imminent threat, we are aligning our strategy with national directives to ensure readiness.”
Local residents, while supportive of the government’s initiative, have also called for further security reinforcements, including aerial surveillance and the deployment of air-defense systems. Authorities have assured that current measures will be reviewed periodically in line with the evolving security scenario.
Statewide Surveillance Intensified
Simultaneously, the Odisha government has declared multiple regions, particularly along the coast and near defense installations, as “No Flying Zones” to counter potential threats posed by unauthorized drone activity. Law enforcement and intelligence agencies have been placed on high alert, with special units tasked with monitoring drone movements and other suspicious aerial activity.
Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari stated on Saturday, “While there is no immediate danger, the government is taking all necessary precautions. The public is urged to remain calm and cooperate with the authorities. These steps are preventive and in line with national efforts to safeguard our strategic interests.”
Emergency response units, the state police, and intelligence wings are working in tandem to ensure comprehensive situational awareness. Surveillance capabilities have been upgraded, and coordination with central security agencies has been intensified.
Leaves Cancelled for Administrative and Police Officials
In a parallel administrative move, the Odisha government has issued directives cancelling the leaves of key officials, including Regional Development Commissioners (RDCs), District Collectors, and Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, in anticipation of any potential crisis.
A notification issued by the General Administration and Public Grievance Department stated, “In view of the ongoing war-like conditions on the western front of the country, all leaves sanctioned earlier in favour of all RDCs and Collector & DMs are hereby cancelled. All RDCs and Collector & DMs on leave are instructed to return to headquarters and join duty immediately.”
A similar order was issued for IPS officers by the Home Department, directing that no officer be allowed to proceed on leave, attend training programs, or avail Leave Travel Concession (LTC) without express approval. The directive also prohibits IPS officers from leaving their headquarters without prior permission from the concerned Director General (DG) or Special DG.
