In a major breakthrough, security forces have taken control of Karegutta Hill, a key Maoist stronghold on the Chhattisgarh–Telangana border. The successful operation marks a significant blow to the insurgency and is being seen as a crucial step towards achieving a “Naxal Mukt Bharat.”
On April 30, reports suggest that approximately 500 airdropped commandos stormed Karegutta Hill, overpowering Maoist defenses in a planned assault. The rugged terrain, spanning Bijapur district’s Usoor block in Chhattisgarh and Charla and Venkatapuram mandals in Telangana, has long served as a “natural fortress” for Maoists. Dense forests, hidden tunnels, and bunkers provided cover, while landmines in villages like Pamudur, Tadapala, Jella, Doli, and Bandaru Palli rendered the area inaccessible.

The operation, part of the broader “Operation Kagar,” targeted top Maoist commanders, including Hidma, Deva, and Damodar, believed to be hiding in the region. Reports indicate that Maoists waved the white flag, signaling a ceasefire, but security forces remain relentless, combing the area to flush out remaining insurgents.

Karegutta’s fall follows intensified operations in the Abujhmad zone, a Maoist stronghold in Chhattisgarh. As security forces tightened their grip there, insurgents relocated to Karegutta, viewing it as a fallback safe zone. The discovery of a large natural cave, bunkers, and arms caches during the operation underscores the strategic importance of the area.
The operation, which began in April 24, has involved over security personnel from Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and central forces, including CRPF, CoBRA, DRG, Bastar Fighters, and Telangana’s Greyhounds.
