The Mahakumbh 2025 was not just the largest human congregation on the planet; it was a profound expression of Bharat’s civilisational continuity and connectivity. Mahakumbh 2025, held in Prayagraj, has set new benchmarks in terms of organisation, participation, and global outreach, reaffirming the unifying power of Bharat. As the grand event concludes, it is crucial to reflect on its success, impact, and the way forward.

In this spirit, Organiser and Panchjanya organised “Manthan – Mahakumbh & Beyond”, a unique one-day confluence in Hotel Taj Mahal, Lucknow on March 12, 2025. The one-day confluence was divided in five sessions bringing together eminent personalities, distinguished Sadhu-Sanyasis, policymakers, and thought leaders to engage in insightful discussions on the cultural, spiritual, and socio-economic dimensions of Mahakumbh.

The inaugural session titled “Mahakumbh Ke Maharaj” was graced by Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Shri Yogi Adityanath. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak was also present at the event. CM Yogi Adityanath was welcomed by Bharat Prakashan’s (Delhi) Pvt Ltd Managing Director, Arun Kumar Goyal, who also extended a welcome to Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak. Prafulla Ketkar, Editor of Organiser and Hitesh Shankar, Editor of Panchjanya interacted with Chief Minister on various aspects of Mahakumbh.

The second session was titled “Spirituality: Confluence of Sanatan”. Revered Acharya Mithilesh Nandinisharan ji Maharaj, Hanumat Niwas Peethadhishwar, Ayodhya Dham, Sadhvi Jaya Bharati, Founder, Human Life Foundation, Lama Geshe Chosphel Zotpa, President of the Himalayan Buddhist Culture Association discussed on Spiritual Samagam of Sanatan.

The third session titled ‘Sustainability: Social Challenges and Solutions’ was graced by Gopal Arya, National Convener, Paryavaran Sanrakshan Gatividhi of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) who shared insights into how various environmental initiatives achieved massive success without any financial investment in this Mahakumbh Lt Col (Retd) Dr Praveen Kumar Reddy, Chief Medical Officer, Netra Kumbh RSS discussed the inspiring journey of the Netra Kumbh, medical camp dedicated to eye care, which was organised on the sidelines of the Mahakumbh.

In the fourth session titled “Integrity: Realising Oneness”, senior RSS Pracharak and National Convenor of Prajna Pravah J Nandakumar highlighted the historical continuity of the Kumbh Mela, emphasising that it is an uninterrupted spiritual phenomenon that cannot be viewed in isolation. Rinpoche Jangchup Choeden, Secretary General, International Buddhist Confederation reflected on the diversity within Sanatan Dharma, mentioning that while sects, for instance, Shaivites and Vaishnavites may have theological differences, they respect each other’s traditions, that’s what makes Bharat unique.

In the fifth session, titled “Security and Success”, UP Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak, in his address, congratulated Bharat Prakashan team for organising a purposeful event like Manthan. Amrit Abhijat, Principal Secretary, Urban Development, Avanish Avasthi, Advisor to the UP Govt and Dr KV Raju, Economic Advisor to Chief Minister, UP Government shared their views on economic and security aspect of Mahakumbh and its successful organisation.

Secretary of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust Champat Rai Ji participated in the deliberations and expressed his candid views in the valedictory session titled “Virasat ka Corridor”. He spoke at length about his experiences of Kumbh at Ayodhya and compared it with the stark contrast with that of Mahakumbh at Prayagraj.

Spirituality: Confluence of Sanatan

“Churning (Manthan) happens in many forms; it is not limited to just the Samudra Manthan. Iif someone without vision does the churning, nothing comes of it. Only those who do not stop are worthy of attaining Amrit (nectar). The gods and demons churned the ocean, but it was the gods who deserved the nectar. The demons were deprived of it because they lacked restraint and self-discipline. Similarly, many tried to defame Mahakumbh, but they failed. The Mahakumbh is the grand manifestation of culture on the sacred land of spirituality. Even those across the world whose vision was clouded by illusion and negativity have been awakened by the Mahakumbh. It is the divine reflection of Bharat’s immense spiritual presence. The world was now ready to witness the vastness of Bharat,” said Acharya Mithilesh Nandinisharan Ji Maharaj, Shri Hanumat Niwas Peethadhishwar, Ayodhya Dham.

He added, “Many have long questioned Bharat’s numbers, wondering how so many people could gather in one place. Those who doubted the massive gatherings described in the Mahabharata have now received their answer. The Mahakumbh brought together half of Bharat’s population, uniting them under a shared vision.”

Lama Geshe Chosphel Zotpa, President of Himalayan Buddhist Culture Association; and Organiser of Bauddh Vishesh Sangam at Mahakumbh, highlighted significance of Mahakumbh in fostering unity and spiritual discourse at the Mahakumbh. He noted that for the first time, a Buddhist Shivir was organised within the gathering of akharas. He expressed gratitude to the UP Govt, CM Yogi Adityanath, PM Narendra Modi, and others for their support. He acknowledged the role of various organisations in facilitating dialogues between sects. Representatives from 12 countries participated, reinforcing that Buddhists are an integral part of Sanatan Dharma, despite misconceptions that, “We are different”.

One of the key aspects of the gathering was understanding how different traditions can support one another, unite, and progress collectively. The Mahasangam (grand confluence) provided an opportunity for introspection, reinforcing the importance of self-purification. A large delegation from Mahayana and Theravāda traditions participated, with over 300 Buddhists taking a dip and performing Jalabhishek, a ritual significant in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions.

He also shared details about, Sowa Rigpa healing system, a part of AYUSH, recognising its use of medicinal herbs and natural elements for holistic treatment. Nearly 10 Buddhist doctors provided medical aid at the Kumbh showcasing their commitment to humanitarian service. He also memntioned the Tantric Buddhist practice of Sand Mandalas, a sacred ritual symbolising cosmic transformation. Lama Zotpa emphasised that such traditions strengthen the connection between Sanatan Dharma and Buddhism.

Sadhvi Jaya Bharti addressed the impact of Mahakumbh in challenging long-standing narratives. “We were told that Sanatan Dharma is losing relevance. Yet, Mahakumbh has proven its strength. Sanatan does not require external validation—it is eternal,” she affirmed. She further emphasised the role of youth in the global recognition of Sanatan Dharma, stating, “Young scholars and researchers from across the world have come to study our organisational skills. No matter how hard people try to suppress Sanatan Dharma, they cannot succeed.”

Sustainability: Social challenges and Solution

“The idea behind this initiative was to make Mahakumbh Jan-Jan ka Kumbh—a spiritual experience for even those who could not physically attend the event in Prayagraj. I remember how the Ek Thaila, Ek Thali campaign became a massive ‘Harit Kumbh’ (Green Kumbh) movement that deeply resonated with people across Bharat. I came across many emotional stories of elderly individuals and women who, despite being unable to travel to Prayagraj, actively contributed to the initiative. The campaign’s reach was unprecedented, with over 14.17 lakh thalis and 13.5 lakh thaile collected through extensive door-to-door campaigns conducted by PSG volunteers across the country. These thalis and thaile were then distributed to Akharas and sadhus, ensuring that the event remained as eco-friendly as possible. Additionally, the acharyas who received the thalis pledged to continue promoting the idea of plastic-free religious gatherings in future events,” expressed National Convenor of RSS’s Paryavaran Sanrakshan Gatividhi, Shri Gopal Arya. The impact of the initiative was so immense that it prevented 29,000 tonnes of plastic waste from being generated. Furthermore, 20,000 thalis were provided to policemen stationed at the Kumbh, while 15,000 thalis were distributed among sanitation workers in recognition of their service. Reflecting on the success of the campaign, Gopal Arya stated, “If the intent is right, we can achieve any goal.”

Dr Praveen Kumar Reddy, Chief Medical Officer, Netra Kumbh 2025, discussed the inspiring journey of the Netra Kumbh, a medical camp dedicated to eye care, organised on the sidelines of the Mahakumbh. He highlighted that the Mahayojan was executed as a zero-budget initiative, following the successful models of 2019 and 2021. Renunciation and service being their twin ideals, the 2025 Netra Kumbh successfully addressed issues like lack of access to proper healthcare due to financial constraints and logistical challenges, ensuring free eye care services for thousands. The initiative made a significant impact, with 1.5 lakh spectacles distributed free of cost, 2.5 lakh individuals screened, spectacles provided in real-time, 7800 advanced eye screenings conducted, and 6,500 customised spectacles made with precision.

Dr Reddy noted that 80 per cent of eyesight issues can be solved digitally, and hence, the Netra Kumbh focused on creating partnerships with 53 organisations to improve accessibility to eye care. Logistically, organising the Netra Kumbh at such a massive scale posed several challenges. To overcome them, an 8.5-acre land was allocated for the Netra Kumbh facility, and a fully operational Netra Kendra (Eye Care Centre) was established. A total of 450 doctors volunteered their time and expertise to ensure smooth execution of the programme. The initiative turned out to be a major success, setting a precedent for future healthcare efforts for large gatherings.

Integrity: Realising Oneness

“We cannot analyse a grand event that has persisted for centuries in isolation. It is an eternal flow (Akhand Pravah), evolving with time. No one knows when it started, what we do know is that Kumbh Mela represents the intrinsic unity that Hindu and Sanatan Sanskriti offer to the  world,” expressed J Nandakumar Ji, National Convener, Prajna Pravah.

He further elaborated, “The Kumbh Mela has always played a pivotal role in inspiring the Indian independence movement. The 1856-57 Kumbh in Haridwar witnessed the gathering of patriots, and figures like Nanaji Deshmukh and many others like him found inspiration in its spirit. Swami Vivekananda made Kumbh Mela his first social outreach programme in 1916, where he met Pujya Shraddhanand Ji. Even the first planning meeting of the Hindu Mahasabha was attended by Gandhi Ji on the sidelines of Kumbh Mela. Kumbh is deeply connected to Bharat’s unity and integrity. The responsibility of carrying forward this spirit lies with all of us as Bharatiya society is influenced not by Prachar, but Vichar.”

Intellectual gatherings like Yuva Kumbh, Vidyut Kumbh, Seva Vibhag’s Gyan Kumbh were organised by Prajna Pravah at Mahakumbh with Juna Akhara to propagate Hindu philosophical discourse.

Lama Rinpoche Jangchup Choeden, Secretary General, International Buddhist Confederation stated, “Bharat is unlike any other country. Its thinkers, traditions, and philosophies inspire faith across the globe. The idea of peaceful coexistence that Bharat has given to the world is a characteristic that makes this land truly unique.” Rinpoche Ji emphasised that ideological differences exist in Bharat, but they coexist under the concept of “Vyavharik Samanta” (Practical Equality).

He contrasted this with nations where only one ideology dominates, highlighting Bharat’s inclusivity: “To foster unity among the citizens of this country, we must take pride in our history and heritage.” From a global Buddhist perspective, he called Bharat as ‘the motherland of Buddhism’. He reflected on the diversity within Sanatan Dharma, mentioning that while sects may have theological differences, they respect each other’s traditions. That’s what makes Bharat unique. Bharatiya traditions thrive on mutual respect and understanding. He added, “We don’t run after each other with weapons in hand for ideological differences, we respect diversity and believe in co-existence.” Rinpoche stressed the need for a historical reawakening, emphasising that: “We cannot afford to forget our past. The secret of our strength lies in our ability to build unity despite differences. This is our truth, and we have no other choice but to uphold it.” Reflecting on the scale of Mahakumbh’s organisation, Rinpoche Ji remarked: “If we set our minds to something, we can achieve anything. The sheer scale at which Bharat organised Mahakumbh is phenomenal. No other nation has done anything like this.”

Security and Success

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said, “I met devotees on my way to check the arrangements at Mahakumbh. They said they can’t express their feelings in words. The feeling can only be experienced by taking the Dubki (holy dip) at Triveni Sangam.” He congratulated Organiser and Panchjanya to arrange a purposeful Manthan for deliberations on this grand once in a lifetime event.

A glimpse of Mahakumbh was also presented at the confluence in the form of photo wall

The panelists shared their views on economic and security aspect of Mahakumbh and its successful organisation. Advisor to the UP CM Avanish Awasthi said, “Mahakumbh showed the whole world that Bharat is capable of conducting an event at such a massive scale. Kumbh has happened at Ayodhya, Nashik, Ujjain but not more than a few thousands have visited ever before. A 45 days grand event where about 1 crore people arrive daily is unprecedented. Still, the administration work was commendable. So many boatmen, cleanliness workers, trains, etc was arranged and all the works were managed skillfully. Foreigners arriving in such great numbers was another attraction of Kumbh. People ate together in a Pangat in Mahakumbh. Never has food been made available at such a grand level. This is Bharatiya Sanskriti. More than 70,000 police force was deployed, excellent crowd management was done.”

Principal Secretary, Urban Development Amrit Abhijat, said, “Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh walked every inch of the place to see the arrangements. He led from the front, and has always been an inspiration.” He explained how Mahakumbh was planned through a presentation. “15000 crores were allotted for Mahakumbh, and 65000 crores plus devotees visited the sacred city for holy dip. 75 per cent funds were spent on proper facilities and a standardised example was set. Our plan was to create such a Kumbh arrangement that it could be smoothly held every year henceforth without any hassles. Cleanliness cwas an important issue for us. We renovated ghats, built 14 permanent bridges, 1.5 Lakh toilets, urban infrastructure, water ATMs, 65000 plus tap water connections, etc. 1500 Ganga Seva Doots, 25000 workers, mechanised road sweeping, MRF centers, etc were ensured for cleanliness. For aesthetics and assistance for travellers, different language road signages, beautiful structures, 84 Astha ke Stambh and numerous tents with all essential facilities were built. Digital Mahakumbh Experience Center was also built. Technological expertise ICCC was used for safety and security of devotees for a secure Kumbh experience. 2700 CCTVs installed in Mela Kshetra and 5000 installed across city. Khoya Paya centers were placed uniformly. No mobiles, wallets or people were lost. Law and order was impeccable. Drones tracked whether areas are clean or not. 300 crore kanthimalas were sold, chaiwalas earned in lakhs. Economy got a big boost,” he exclaimed joyously. He further added, “26 Institutions like Harvard, Stanford, IITs, IIMs visited Mahakumbh and are preparing reports which will be assessed. They were thoroughly impressed with all arrangements.”

Dignitaries from different fields participated in the confluence

Economic Advisor to Chief Minister, UP Government Dr KV Raju expressed, “Humans are linked to hydraulic civilisation. Water is needed for drinking, washing, survival, everything. All the development has happened near water bodies. This Mahakumbh ensured not just Vyawastha, but Suvyawastha as the best of arrangements possible were made. It was organised, systematic and very well orchestrated. Auto and E rickshaw walas benefitted the most in Maha Kumbh. Two wheelers were profited. Boatmen earned a lot. Water bottle sellers, home stays, everyone earned so much that they could sustain for about 2-3 years. People prospered. Even technologically, Mahakumbh was Bhavya, Divya and Digital. Parking place for 5 lakh vehicles, an unthinkable work, was accomplished with dedication. All villages got good roads and satisfactory sanitation facilities across the city. It was not just a religious gathering but an economical event ensuring overall development.”

Economic Advisor to UP Government Dr KV Raju, UP Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, Advisor to UP CM Avanish Awasthi, Principal Secretary, Urban Development Amrit Abhijat

The confluence witnessed audience from a vast range of arenas. More than 200 eminent dignitaries from various fields attended the event. Though the magnificent and mega celebration is over, the message of Sanatan must continue to resonate and “Manthan – Mahakumbh & Beyond” was envisioned with this thought. Let us continue the churning and explore for the nectar of prosperity with spirituality and sustainability as the base.
