Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in a decisive move aimed at bolstering national security and restoring law and order in the national capital issued a stern directive to identify and deport all illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya intruders from Delhi. The landmark decision was taken during a high-level meeting, which was attended by newly-elected Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood, Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora, and senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
According to senior officials present at the meeting, Amit Shah was categorical in his instruction that the entire network facilitating the illegal entry, documentation, and settlement of Bangladeshi and Rohingya migrants in Delhi be dismantled with immediate effect. “The issue of illegal intruders is directly linked to national security and should be dealt with strictly. The illegal migrants in the city should be identified and deported,” Amit Shah asserted.
The Home Minister stressed that a “top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top” approach must be adopted to eliminate illegal occupancy. “Strict action should be taken against the entire network facilitating the illegal stay of these intruders, including those who helped them acquire false documents,” he added. This crackdown will extend beyond the migrants themselves to include individuals and groups that assisted in their illegal settlement, whether through document forgery or property arrangements.

Sources indicate that a detailed audit is currently underway in various colonies identified as major hubs for Bangladeshi and Rohingya populations. The operation aims to root out illegal occupants and penalise those who enabled their stay. “Instructions have already been circulated at the ‘thana’ level to ensure swift implementation,” an official disclosed.
Double-engine government to work at “double speed”
The meeting also marked a significant moment in governance, being the first of its kind in over a decade to include a sitting Chief Minister of Delhi. Rekha Gupta, who was sworn in as Delhi’s fourth woman CM on February 20, was present alongside Home Minister Ashish Sood. The discussion reinforced the BJP-led “double-engine government” approach, aimed at accelerating development and enhancing security measures in the capital.
Amit Shah reiterated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government would now operate at “double speed” to ensure that Delhi is rid of illegal migrants, crime networks, and administrative inefficiencies. “Delhiites should feel assured that the new government will tackle illegal occupancy with an iron hand,” Amit Shah stated.
Beyond the issue of illegal migrants, Amit Shah also issued orders for a severe crackdown on interstate gangs operating in Delhi-NCR. He emphasised that the Delhi Police must adopt a no-nonsense approach while dealing with these criminal groups. “Street crime directly impacts the perception of safety among common citizens. The approach of Delhi Police should be ruthless in eliminating these gangs,” he instructed.
Additionally, the Home Minister directed Delhi Police to take strict action against underperforming police stations and subdivisions that have consistently failed to control crime. He stressed the need for more proactive policing, with DCP-level officers being tasked with regular public hearings and grievance redressal.
Amit Shah also addressed the prolonged legal proceedings related to the 2020 Delhi riots. He instructed the Delhi government to appoint special prosecutors to ensure the quick disposal of riot-related cases. This move is expected to bring swift justice and prevent prolonged legal delays.
Furthermore, the Delhi government was urged to immediately begin police recruitment to address staff shortages and improve law enforcement capacity.
Apart from security concerns, the meeting also delved into civic issues affecting Delhiites daily. Amit Shah ordered an immediate survey of bottleneck points across the city where traffic congestion is a persistent issue. The Delhi Police Commissioner and Chief Secretary were directed to implement swift deployments to ease traffic flow and ensure that commuters do not suffer due to poor planning.
Similarly, recognising the city’s recurring waterlogging problem during the monsoon season, the Home Minister directed the Delhi government to formulate a “Monsoon Action Plan.” This plan will identify vulnerable locations prone to waterlogging and implement preventive measures before the onset of heavy rains. Another major decision that emerged from the meeting was that the Delhi Police would no longer require approval in matters related to construction. This move is expected to reduce bureaucratic delays and streamline urban development processes.
