Tamil Nadu is on the verge of recording 100 cases of Sexual assaults and harassment against women and children since the beginning of 2025. A netizen noted that in the first 36 days of the year, 95 such incidents have already been reported in the state.

“In the last one week alone, rape of a pregnant woman in a moving train, rape of a three years girl in an Anganwadi, eight years in a school,  three teachers gang raped 13 years, 16 years was abducted and gang raped in moving auto while she was waiting to board a bus,  19 years raped in university campus,  alleged murder attempt on a senior IPS woman officer, assault on woman VAO with cow dung’ says a post in social media.

The opposition says, “No other state in the country can compete with the Dravidian Model governance of DMK rule in this regard, which is highly regrettable and shameful for the rulers”.  Hardly a day passes without such incidents being found in social media and some neutral visual and print media.  On some days,  more than one incident is reported from Tamil Nadu.

In a shocking one, a nine-year-old female student was sexually harassed by the 54-year trustee of Sri Guru Vidyalaya Matriculation School near Manapparai town in a glaring way into the classroom in front of the victim’s peers on the 6th morning when the accused came to the class and asked the teacher to move out.  Police said he inappropriately touched the victim.  The girl told her parents about his touching body inappropriately. Family members, who rushed to school seeking action against the accused and the others for their role in not reporting to the police, held protests. The accused, who came to the spot, engaged in a verbal war with them. Manapparai police rushed to the school and shifted the accused to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Trichy. Relatives of the victim demanded footage of the CCTV of the harassment from the school.  The visuals that were shared made me angry further.

Meanwhile, some barged into the school of the same management and vandalised the properties. The family of Marachi (79) has been running Sri Guru Vidyalaya Matriculation School at Manapparaipatti Road and Sri Guru Vidyalaya CBSE School adjacent to it.

In this connection, police arrested Vasanthkumar, his wife Sudha, school secretary (her father) M Marachi, deputy correspondent M Ilanchezhiyan and principal P Jayalakshmi. They have been booked under various sections of the Pocso Act.

The Manapparai incident came days after three government school teachers in Krishnagiri were arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a female student inside the washroom. The arrested are identified as  (left to right) Chinnasamy, Arumugam and Prakash

Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai, in a post in X in Tamil, says, “My heart aches reading the news that comes out every day in Tamil Nadu. Our society is becoming so unsafe that not a day goes by without sexual crimes against women. Before the shock of the news of a Krishnagiri government school girl being sexually assaulted by three teachers subsided, this morning alone, there were reports of crimes against women, such as the sexual harassment of a fourth-grade student by private school administrators in Manapparai, the sexual harassment of a pregnant woman travelling in a train in Vellore and pushed off from the train, the sexual harassment of a government school girl by a physical education teacher in Salem, and the murder of a Panchayat vice-chairman’s wife by entering the house in Tirupattur. Where is Tamil Nadu going? The DMK runs a useless government based on the principle that “as is the king, so are the subjects”, and using the state machinery to protect the criminals if they are DMK members has led to the fact that today, anti-social elements have no fear of the law or the police. Doesn’t it bother you, Chief Minister @mkstalin, from adult women to small children are not safe in Tamil Nadu?”

Earlier, talking to media persons on the Anna University incident, he said, “There are some terms are new to Tamil  Nadu. One of them is gang rape. We have been hearing it frequently over the past three years. Crimes against women are at an all time high. This incident is not only shocking but leaves us paralysed with shame”.

Karthik Gopinath of the BJP IT wing said, “Under the undisciplined rulers, we can’t expect teachers with good moral values and discipline. The teachers became wolves.

Leader of Opposition and AIADMK general secretary Edapaddi K Palaniswamy reiterated that Tamil Nadu is unsafe for women and children. In a post on X handle,  Expressing shock over the incident, he said,  “The state’s government’s handling the crimes against women and children is not appreciable. Tamil Nadu is unsafe. The continuation of such incidents was the result of showing little attention to women’s safety.  He said, “It is the height of shame that women in the state can’t walk safely on the road, go to schools, colleges and workplaces. And now even travel on trains”.  The former CM demanded stringent action against those responsible for crimes against women and children.

Tamil Nadu BJP vice president Narayanan Thirupathi says, “In Tamil Nadu this year alone (In 38 days), 96 cases of women & Children sexual harassment have taken place. This exposes the deteriorating law and order and denotes the evil socio-cultural conditions prevailing in Tamil Nadu.  Lacklustre and failing administration & Governance by the State Government and, more importantly the liquor that  is being sold by the TASMAC shops owned by the state government that makes people addicted and intoxicated. Liquor is the main cause for all the social evils but the state government continues to sell the same with more aggression to earn more revenue. Instead of insisting ‘Liquor is injurious to family and country’ let the Dravida Model @arivalayam”.
