Guwahati: Two Islamist Jihadis were found guilty by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Special Court in Guwahati for their roles in a anti-India conspiracy by the Bangladesh based terrorist group Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), an Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) affiliate terror outfit. One of those found guilty, Mamunur Rashid, was sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,000 respectively. For connected offenses, he was also given extra simple jail sentences for other crimes committed as a terrorist group member.
Mukibul Hussain, the second terrorist, received a sentence of six months of simple imprisonment, a Rs 500 fine, and further jail time for other offenses. This lawsuit, which was first filed in March 2022, concerns the identification of an ABT module run by Bangladeshi national Saiful Islam in the Barpeta district of Assam. According to investigations, the module was involved in recruiting, radicalization, and the establishment of sleeper cells for AQIS in the area.
August 2022 saw the NIA file chargesheets against eight terrorists accused, while August 2023 saw the filing of supplemental chargesheets against two more. In its ongoing “Operation Praghat” against Islamic extremists, the Assam Police’s Special Task Force (STF) arrested 14 terrorists for their ties with Bangladesh based on the “jihadi” network. STF has thwarted a terror plan of multiple blasts across the country by the Islamist terrorists and seized weapons and IED in Assam. One most wanted Bangladeshi terrorist was also arrested by the STF in an operation in Kerala on December 17, 2024.
