The grand Mahakumbh Mela 2025, one of the most significant spiritual gatherings globally, commenced on January 13 with the first Shahi Snan on Paush Purnima, attracting over 1.5 crore devotees. On January 14, Makar Sankranti, the second Shahi Snan, saw a record turnout of over four crore pilgrims taking a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam. With over 40 crore visitors expected during the 45-day event, Mahakumbh 2025 showcases transformative infrastructure advancements designed to ensure safety, efficiency, and a seamless spiritual experience.

Here is an in-depth look at 12 key developments that highlight this monumental effort:

Floating Police Chowkis for Enhanced Security
For the first time, floating police chowkis have been deployed on the Ganga and Yamuna rivers to strengthen security. These state-of-the-art chowkis, implemented by the Uttar Pradesh Police, are equipped with advanced surveillance systems, first-aid facilities, and communication networks. Patrolling boats stationed alongside these chowkis ensure the constant monitoring of river activities, preventing overcrowding and addressing emergencies promptly. This initiative has improved the safety of pilgrims and streamlined crowd management at the ghats.

102 Parking Facilities Across the Mela Area
To tackle vehicular congestion, 102 parking facilities have been developed, covering areas within a 10-km radius of the main bathing sites. Over 70 per cent of these parking spaces are located within 5 km of the ghats, ensuring convenience for visitors. Each parking zone has drinking water stations, sanitation facilities, first-aid kiosks, and public address systems. The administration has also set up 24 satellite parking zones, allowing pilgrims to park and access the mela area via shuttle services. This effort, managed by the district administration, has significantly reduced traffic bottlenecks.

Introduction of Water Ambulances
A groundbreaking initiative by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), water ambulances have been introduced to provide emergency medical assistance on the rivers. Equipped with oxygen cylinders, life-saving drugs, and on-board medical personnel, these ambulances operate 24/7 to address medical emergencies during the mela. Strategically stationed at the Sangam, these ambulances ensure timely responses to critical situations, offering millions of pilgrims a unique layer of safety.

Digital Payment Integration for Seamless Transactions
In collaboration with Paytm, the Uttar Pradesh government has introduced a comprehensive digital payment infrastructure for Mahakumbh. Pilgrims can now make secure and hassle-free transactions using UPI, UPI Lite, and card payments at various stalls and services. Unique QR codes, soundboxes, and card machines have been installed at key points throughout the mela grounds. Paytm’s “Security and Convenience at the Confluence” campaign also offers cashback rewards to encourage digital adoption, reducing the dependency on cash transactions.

Floating Jetties and Changing Rooms
Seven major ghats in Prayagraj have been outfitted with floating jetties, enabling safe and convenient access to the rivers for pilgrims. Additionally, changing rooms, mainly designed for women, have been established near these ghats. Security has been enhanced with CCTV cameras, drone surveillance, and motorboat patrolling. Managed by the NDRF, PAC, and the Civil Police, this development ensures safety and privacy for all visitors.

Launch of FM Radio Channel ‘Kumbhvani’
The government has launched Kumbhvani, a dedicated FM radio channel that disseminates real-time information and cultural programming. Managed by All India Radio, Kumbhvani broadcasts updates on traffic, safety protocols, and key events at the mela. It also highlights the spiritual and cultural significance of Mahakumbh, reaching remote areas and fostering a deeper connection with the festival.

State-of-the-Art Media Center
The media centre, inaugurated on January 9, provides a centralized hub for journalists covering Mahakumbh. Equipped with high-speed internet, audio-visual facilities, and dedicated workspaces, the centre ensures seamless event reporting. It also showcases Prayagraj’s transformation under government initiatives, such as the Jal Jeevan Mission and environmental conservation projects.

Deployment of 7,000 Buses for Efficient Transport
The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) has deployed over 7,000 buses, including 350 shuttle buses, to facilitate smooth transportation. These buses connect Prayagraj to nearby regions and key points within the Mela area. Eight temporary bus stations have been set up strategically to reduce congestion and ensure a streamlined commuting experience for pilgrims.

180 Mobile Towers for Uninterrupted Connectivity
To meet the connectivity demands of millions of visitors, Indus Towers has installed 180 mobile towers across Prayagraj. This includes 110 permanent towers for long-term connectivity improvements and 70 “Cell on Wheels” (COW) towers for temporary coverage. This initiative ensures seamlessly communication and internet access, enabling better coordination among authorities and providing a hassle-free experience for tech-savvy pilgrims.

Urban Forest Development Using Japanese Technology
The government has employed the Miyawaki technique to develop urban forests in Prayagraj, enhancing air quality and green cover. Over 1.2 lakh trees of 63 native species have been planted in the city, creating “oxygen banks” to offset pollution. This project, spearheaded by the Uttar Pradesh administration, demonstrates a commitment to sustainability, offering pilgrims a cleaner and greener environment.

30 New Pontoon Bridges Across the Ganga
To manage the flow of pilgrims, 30 pontoon bridges have been constructed across the Ganga. These bridges are designed to withstand heavy loads and facilitate efficient movement between mela zones. This initiative has significantly reduced traffic congestion and enhanced accessibility for pilgrims and vendors, ensuring smoother logistics.

100-bed Hospital with Advanced Medical Facilities
A dedicated 100-bed hospital near the Mela grounds ensures high-quality healthcare for pilgrims. Managed by the health department, the hospital features AI-enabled monitoring systems, free diagnostic services, and a fully equipped ICU. Specialised teams, including paramedics and doctors, operate round-the-clock to provide immediate care, ensuring that no medical emergency goes unattended.

The Mahakumbh 2025 infrastructure projects reflect a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation. From floating police chowkis to urban forest development, these initiatives showcase how modern infrastructure can enhance spiritual experiences. With Prayagraj at the centre of this monumental event, the efforts of the Uttar Pradesh government and collaborating organizations have set new benchmarks for global mega-events. As millions gather at the Triveni Sangam, Mahakumbh 2025 is a testament to India’s cultural heritage, resilience, and progress.
