On December 20, 2024, a horrifying incident unfolded at a bustling Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, when a 50-year-old Saudi-born doctor, identified as Taleb Al-Abdulmohsen, drove a BMW into the crowd. The attack left five people dead and over 200 injured, with several victims reportedly in critical condition.

For Christians, Christmas embodies joy, giving, and hope—a season deeply rooted in celebration and community. Tragically, the festive period has also become a time of vulnerability, as terror attacks exploiting the season’s gatherings continue to disrupt lives and spread fear. From bombings to vehicular assaults, these incidents target crowds, undermining the spirit of festivity.

In light of recent events, let us take you through details of 11 terror attacks and thwarted plots that occurred during Christmas between 2013 and 2024.

1. 2024 Magdeburg Christmas Market Attack—Germany

On December 20, 2024, Taleb A., a Saudi national and psychiatrist residing in Germany since 2006, drove a BMW into a crowded Christmas market in Magdeburg. The attack left five dead and over 200 injured. The car plowed 400 meters through the festive market before authorities apprehended the driver. An explosive device was later discovered in the vehicle.

German authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack, which has sent shockwaves across the globe. Taleb, who described himself as an ex-Muslim atheist on social media, has drawn widespread condemnation for his actions. However, his claimed identity as an ex-Muslim atheist has raised significant skepticism, with members of the ex-Muslim community voicing concerns about his affiliation.

2. 2023 Cologne Cathedral Terror Plot—Germany

On December 31, 2023, German police in Vienna arrested three Tajik nationals with ties to ISIS-K, the Afghanistan-based Islamic State offshoot. The group was planning a New Year’s Eve attack on Cologne Cathedral in Germany.

3. Plateau State Christmas Massacre – Nigeria (2023)

On Christmas Eve, December 24, 2023, suspected Fulani militias attacked 21 Christian villages in Plateau State, Nigeria. The coordinated assault claimed nearly 200 lives and displaced over 32,000 people. Amnesty International confirmed 194 deaths, and the Nigerian Red Cross documented extensive destruction of homes and churches.

The violence, concentrated in Bokkos, Barkin Ladi, and Mangu counties, unfolded over seven hours, marking one of the deadliest Christmas-related attacks in Nigeria’s recent history.

4. Boko Haram Christmas Day Attack—Nigeria (2023)

On December 25, 2023, Boko Haram militants attacked a Christian village in northeastern Nigeria. Two residents were killed, and homes were set ablaze. Survivors described looted shops, destroyed homes, and injuries inflicted with guns and machetes.

This attack is part of a longstanding campaign of violence by Boko Haram, targeting Christian communities in the region.

5. Teenagers’ Christmas Market Plot—Germany (2023)

On November 28, 2023, German authorities arrested two teenagers plotting a vehicular assault on a Christmas market in Leverkusen. The 15-year-old suspect had shared details of the plot, including videos featuring ISIS symbols, in online chat groups. Both suspects were charged, with one sentenced to four years in custody.

6. Pemi Village Attack, Nigeria (2020)

On December 25, 2020, Boko Haram militants attacked Pemi, a predominantly Christian village in Borno State. The attackers killed at least 11 people, set a church on fire, looted Christmas supplies, and burned a hospital.

The attack exemplified Boko Haram’s broader campaign to establish an Islamic state in northeastern Nigeria, where over 36,000 people have been killed in a decade of conflict.

7. Vienna Christmas Market Plot – Austria (2019)

On December 17, 2019, Austrian authorities foiled a terror plot targeting Vienna’s Christmas market and other European locations. Three Chechen men were arrested, including a 24-year-old ringleader already imprisoned for attempting to join ISIS.

8. Berlin Christmas Market Attack – Germany (2016)

On December 19, 2016, Anis Amri, a Tunisian national, drove a truck into Berlin’s Breitscheidplatz Christmas market, killing 12 people. Amri had pledged allegiance to ISIS and was under surveillance for his radical Islamist connections.

The attack, Germany’s deadliest incident, exposed lapses in security measures despite prior warnings about Amri’s activities.

9. San Bernardino Holiday Party Shooting – USA (2015)

On December 2, 2015, Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik killed 14 people at a workplace holiday party in San Bernardino, California. The attack, motivated by Islamist extremism, included plans for bombings and was linked to ISIS propaganda.

10. Dijon Vehicular Assault – France (2014)

On December 22, 2014, a man drove into Christmas shoppers in Dijon, shouting “Allahu Akbar.” Eleven people were injured. While authorities attributed the act to mental illness, the attack followed a series of Islamist-linked incidents in France.

11. Baghdad Christmas Bombings – Iraq (2013)

On December 26, 2013, two car bombs targeted Christians in Baghdad, killing 38 people. One explosion occurred outside a church, while the other struck a nearby market. The attacks underscored the vulnerability of Iraq’s Christian minority amid growing sectarian violence.

These attacks, spanning continents and years, reveal a disturbing pattern of targeting Christian festivities by terror outfits.
