A tragic and shocking incident, a death of new born baby has come to light at the St. Joseph Convent Hostel, run under the Diocese of Eluru. The deceased infant allegedly belonged to a teenage girl, a second-year intermediate student from Nandyal, who was undergoing training to become a nun at the church linked hostel. The initial investigations suggest that the girl was allegedly in a relationship with a trainee Christian Father, now linked to this tragic episode.
On Sunday morning, a resident of a nearby apartment witnessed a woman throwing a newborn out of a window and immediately informed the police. A team led by 2-Town Circle Inspector Ramana, along with officials from the Women and Child Welfare Department rushed to the Convent and discovered the lifeless infant in a vacant area behind the hostel. The baby, believed to have been born recently, was found with its umbilical cord intact and bloodstains around the site.
The teenage mother, who was in critical condition after delivery, was rushed to Sarvajana Hospital for treatment. Forensic teams have been deployed to collect evidence, and the infant’s body was sent for an autopsy.
DSP Shravan Kumar, heading the investigation, questioned the hostel administrators. They also interrogated the girl’s roommates and friends to gather evidence.
The investigations suggest that the girl, who was undergoing training to become a nun at the convent, may have been involved with a trainee Christian Father. Allegations have surfaced about possible misconduct involving a trainee Father from a nearby center, and a suspect has reportedly been taken into custody for questioning.
The death of new born baby has sparked widespread criticism against management and its apparent lapses in supervision of this Church linked hostel. Questions have been raised about how the girl’s pregnancy went unnoticed, despite visible changes in her condition. Shockingly, reports indicate that fellow residents assisted in the delivery of baby but failed to alert authorities, exacerbating the situation.
DSP Shravan Kumar confirmed that a case has been registered and that investigations are ongoing. This tragedy highlights systemic shortcomings in institutional care and safety measures, demanding accountability and reforms to prevent such incidents in the future.

Instances such as the exploitation of nuns in Tamil Nadu, the sexual abuse of children in Church-run orphanages in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, and the infamous baby-selling scandal at Missionaries of Charity in Jharkhand highlight the systemic failure of oversight and accountability. Despite these recurring crimes, the Church has often been accused of covering up such incidents through intimidation, financial settlements, or silencing victims with threats of excommunication. Meanwhile, these grave internal issues are kept away from public discourse, as the Church frequently directs its focus toward raising concerns about the actions of non-Christians, creating an unsettling double standard that demands urgent scrutiny and accountability.
