The Union Government has given the Commission of Inquiry into the violence in Manipur another extension, extending its deadline for submitting its findings till May 20, 2025. Since it began on May 3, 2023, the violence has resulted in at least 258 fatalities and numerous injuries. On June 4, 2023, the committee was formed to look into the origins and spread of the ethnic violence and rioting that targeted different communities in the state. It is chaired by former Chief Justice Ajai Lamba of the Gauhati High Court.
Retired IPS officer Aloka Prabhakar and retired IAS officer Himanshu Shekhar Das are also on the panel. The commission was first given six months from the date of its first meeting to make its findings, but it was given an earlier extension to November 20, 2023. However, more time was required due to the situation’s complexity. In a recent announcement, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) changed the deadline to May 20, 2025.
The commission’s mandate is to investigate the chain of events that led to the violence, spot any oversights or neglect on the part of officials or individuals, and evaluate the effectiveness of the administrative actions implemented to stop and deal with the violence.
Additionally, the commission will consider grievances or accusations made by people or organizations. As to the initial notification released by the MHA on June 4, 2023, widespread violence broke out in Manipur in May 2023, leading to a considerable number of fatalities and injuries. The investigation seeks to shed light on the underlying reasons for the disturbances and suggest ways to stop similar occurrences in the future.
