Bhubaneswar: The target has been established to eradicate Naxalism in Odisha by 2026, with the Central Government assuring all possible support for this endeavour. A dedicated helicopter will soon be deployed for anti-Naxal operations. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi stated that he has requested the Union Home Minister Amit Shah to allocate an exclusive helicopter for the state, and the Home Minister has assured that this demand will be met.
In response to the discussion on the demands for grants for the Home and General Administration Departments during the supplementary budget in the Assembly on Monday evening, the Chief Minister noted that in the last four months, six Naxals have been killed, four arrested, and 24 surrendered as part of the anti-Maoist campaign. Three OSSAF battalions will be established for Maoist suppression, with 3,009 posts approved for this purpose.
Additionally, intelligence reports indicate that Maoists are using ganja (cannabis) cultivation to finance their operations. Consequently, drone technology will be employed to combat ganja cultivation in these areas. To date, 10,541 acres of ganja cultivation have been destroyed, and 1,268 quintals of ganja have been seized.
Strengthening the Police Force
The state police force will be further strengthened. Each police station will receive six new motorcycles to ensure rapid access to crime scenes, enabling prompt investigations. In addition to the existing four-wheelers at police stations, one additional rapid-response vehicle will be provided. Furthermore, 2,922 posts for sub-inspectors, constables, and drivers will be filled. The fire services department will also fill 826 firefighter positions and 115 driver positions. To improve traffic management, more traffic police personnel will be appointed.
Enhancing Coastal Security
Coastal police stations will be equipped with new trawlers, speedboats, and drones to bolster security in Odisha’s coastal regions. Ten rescue dogs will be procured for search and rescue operations in disaster-hit areas, such as collapsed buildings or buried settlements, and these dogs will be stationed across various districts of the state.
The Chief Minister emphasised that 300,000 people have already contributed their opinions as part of a proposal to make Odisha a developed state by 2036. A new law will be enacted to ensure transparency in recruitment processes. The Chief Minister also commended the Vigilance Department for its efforts.
He further stated that Odisha’s peaceful environment has played a crucial role in preventing any untoward incidents during festive seasons. The successful management of cyclones and other disasters has been acknowledged, and he praised the efforts of the Home Department employees in maintaining law and order in the state.
