Gurnam Singh Chaduni, one of the prominent faces behind farmers’ protest, faced a significant defeat in the 2024 Haryana Assembly elections. Contesting from the Pehowa constituency, Chaduni managed to secure only 1,170 votes, placing fifth.
Despite getting huge fame following the farmers’ protest, Chaduni failed to convert his popularity into electoral success. Notably, Congress leader Mandeep Chatha won the Pehowa assembly seat, securing 64,548 votes. BJP leader Jai Bhagwan Sharma followed closely with 57,995 votes. The voters of Pehowa evidently favoured established political leaders over protest figures.
As of 4:00 PM, according to the Election Commission’s latest updates, the counting of votes in the Haryana Assembly election is still underway. The BJP is currently leading in 50 seats, while Congress leads in 35.
Although exit polls and political analysts had predicted a Congress sweep in the state, the BJP is on the verge of securing a historic third consecutive win in the Haryana Assembly elections. This would mark the first time any political party has won three consecutive terms in the state’s history.
Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini is leading in the Ladwa constituency with a margin of over 16,000 votes against Congress’ Mewa Singh. Meanwhile, Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda is leading from the Garhi Sampla-Kiloi seat with a margin of 55,000 votes over BJP’s Manju Hooda.
BJP leader Anil Vij said, “The people of Haryana are teaching Congress a lesson. In the morning, Congress opened their ‘Jhooth ki dukaan’ (shop of lies)… Even within Congress, there are those who want Hooda to lose, and they were the ones bursting crackers.”
Vij himself is leading in the Ambala Cantt constituency with a margin of over 8,000 votes, while independent candidate Chitra Sarwara holds second place.
In Jatland, traditionally considered a Congress stronghold, the BJP is leading in 9 seats. In the Rohtak City assembly constituency, BJP’s Manish Grover is ahead by 800 votes against Congress candidate BB Batra.
