The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed its first charge sheet on Monday in the Kolkata rape and murder case, charging the main accused, Sanjay Roy, with the rape and murder of a 31-year-old junior doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
In the charge sheet submitted to a special court in Kolkata, the CBI stated that Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, allegedly committed the crime on August 9 while the victim was sleeping in the seminar room of the hospital during a break. However, the probe agency did not include charges of gang rape, suggesting that Roy acted alone in committing the crime.
Roy frequently visited the hospital, and on the day of the crime, CCTV footage showed him entering the seminar room at 4:03 AM. He left the room approximately half an hour later.
The Kolkata police also discovered his Bluetooth headphones at the crime scene. Additionally, the CBI stated that the investigation into the destruction of evidence in the rape and murder case is ongoing.
CBI has said that statements from about 200 people have been recorded in the charge sheet named Roy.
Protests erupted across Kolkata and West Bengal, calling for justice for the 31-year-old trainee doctor who was raped and murdered in the hospital’s seminar room while she was resting during her night shift. Her body was discovered the following morning by a junior doctor.
The post-mortem report confirmed that she had been raped and murdered, detailing 25 internal and external injuries on her body. On August 13, the Calcutta High Court directed the CBI to take over the RG Kar rape and murder case from the Kolkata Police, citing lapses that “leave room for suspicion”.
Roy underwent a lie-detector test, during which he maintained his innocence. He stated that when he entered the seminar hall on August 9, the victim was already unconscious.
