BENGALURU: The ongoing Mysore MUDA land scam case has escalated political tensions within the Karnataka Congress, with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah under intense scrutiny. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has launched a detailed investigation into the matter, placing substantial pressure on Siddaramaiah’s leadership. While the Chief Minister has consistently proclaimed his innocence and asserted that there is no reason for his resignation, recent developments suggest that his position may be increasingly at risk. Should the situation deteriorate further, a fierce internal contest for the Chief Minister’s position could emerge within the Congress.

A key factor fueling speculation is the secret meetings being held among prominent ministers such as Dr. G. Parameshwar, Satish Jarakiholi, and HC Mahadevappa. These senior Congress leaders are reportedly strategizing over their future within the party and their political aspirations. Notably, Satish Jarakiholi’s recent low-profile trip to Delhi has attracted considerable attention. During his visit, Jarakiholi held discussions with AICC President Mallikarjuna Kharge and General Secretary KC Venugopal, leading many to speculate that he might be positioning himself as a potential contender for the Chief Minister’s seat.

These internal developments within the Congress come at a time when the party appears deeply divided, with different factions maneuvering for influence. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is considered a strong candidate for the Chief Minister’s post should Siddaramaiah step down, but Jarakiholi’s recent actions have added uncertainty to the succession race. His meeting with Kharge in Delhi followed a discussion among Dalit ministers in Bengaluru, where the idea was floated that a Dalit leader should assume the role of Chief Minister if there is a leadership change. Given that Jarakiholi is a Dalit leader, he is believed to be advocating for greater Dalit representation in the state’s leadership.

Meanwhile, the ED’s investigation into the MUDA land scam has intensified, further increasing the pressure on Siddaramaiah. The probe has sent shockwaves through Karnataka’s political landscape, with the BJP capitalizing on the opportunity to question the Chief Minister’s leadership. BJP leader BY Vijayendra has suggested that significant political changes may be on the horizon, raising doubts about Siddaramaiah’s ability to retain his position much longer.

Internally, the Congress party is grappling with significant turmoil. Reports indicate that closed-door meetings between senior ministers have become a regular occurrence, with leaders discussing strategies to prepare for a possible leadership change should the situation worsen. Parameshwar, Jarakiholi, and Mahadevappa are reportedly positioning themselves for a potential transition in leadership if the MUDA investigation further implicates Siddaramaiah.

Despite Siddaramaiah’s public assertions that he will not step down and continues to act in good faith, the frequency of these secretive meetings suggests otherwise. His position as Chief Minister seems increasingly tenuous, with multiple factions within the Congress bracing for a potential power shift.

Adding another layer of intrigue to the situation is the expected visit of AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal to Karnataka after the Navratri festival. Venugopal is anticipated to hold key meetings with Siddaramaiah, and deputy chief minister  DK Shivakumar, and other senior Congress leaders. This visit could provide greater clarity on the internal dynamics of the Congress party and whether a leadership change is indeed imminent.

As the ED investigation progresses, it is clear that the Congress leadership in Karnataka faces mounting pressure. The future of Siddaramaiah’s leadership remains uncertain, and the coming weeks are likely to determine whether a significant change in the state’s top leadership is on the cards. The political atmosphere remains charged, with observers closely watching how these developments unfold in the near future.
