CHENNAI: Controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu following the display of posters in Chennai and Coimbatore condemning Israel’s recent action of killing Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. The posters, which have appeared outside a mosque in the Mirshahipet locality of Chennai, have sparked widespread outrage and raised concerns over local support for terrorist organisations.

The banners, which praise Nasrallah, refer to him as “the great hero of the world” and “a lion’s nightmare for Israel,” following his death in a missile strike by Israeli forces on September 28, 2024. Nasrallah, who had led Hezbollah since 1992, was hiding in an apartment building in Beirut when he was killed. The posters also feature a quote attributed to Imam Ali, reading, “It is better to die standing upright for the truth than to live your life kneeling down.”

Outrage Over Support for Terrorist Leader
The posters have been met with swift backlash from various sections of society. Netizens on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) expressed their dismay, with one user commenting, “It is a deep level of shame and dishonor to the Tamil culture rooted deeply in the Hindu ethos and way of life to see this poster written in Graantha script showing solidarity with a murderer and Islamist Jihadi terrorist.” Another user referred to Israel as a “terrorist state,” drawing concern over the potential ramifications such posts could have on India’s diplomatic relations with Israel.

Arjun Sampath, leader of the Indu Makkal Katchi, also condemned the display, posting, “Banner hailing Hezbollah terrorist held in Chennai, placed outside a mosque.” His comments reflected the broader concerns about growing support for extremist elements within the state.

The timing of the posters coincides with ongoing concerns in Tamil Nadu over the activities of extremist groups. Just two days before the posters appeared, Tamil Nadu police arrested a man named Abdul Rahim, who had been working as an imam in a mosque in Tondiarpet. Rahim was allegedly involved in brainwashing and recruiting youth for the Hizb-ut-Tahrir, a radical organization. This arrest followed a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into a secret recruitment and training center linked to Hizb-ut-Tahrir in the Royapettah area of Chennai.
The appearance of the Nasrallah posters has heightened suspicions of further sympathizers for terrorist groups within the region. The Tamil Nadu police are reportedly conducting a secret investigation into the extent of support for extremist groups, particularly in areas such as Royapettah, which has a history of radical activities.
Growing Protests Against Israel in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu has recently joined the wave of protests seen in other states like Kashmir, Kerala, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, condemning Israel’s actions in Palestine. While protests in these states focused on Israel’s conflict with Hamas, the appearance of posters supporting Hezbollah’s Nasrallah in Tamil Nadu represents an alarming new development, with local groups publicly backing a globally recognized terrorist organization.
The DMK-led state government has been criticized for what some describe as “appeasement policies” towards extremist elements. Critics argue that the government’s perceived leniency could allow such radical sentiments to grow unchecked, potentially leading to further unrest.
Calls for Immediate Action
Local leaders and citizens are calling for swift action to address these alarming developments. Many have urged the Tamil Nadu government to take a firm stance against any form of support for terrorism, warning that failure to act could lead to an “anarchic situation” that could spiral out of control.
“The government must take immediate steps to curb these activities,” said a local political analyst. “If such acts of solidarity with terrorist organizations are allowed to spread, it could seriously damage the peace and stability of Tamil Nadu.”
