KOLKATA: Another rape case has come to limelight in the state of West Bengal which is ruled by a woman chief minister Mamata Banerjee. What is alarming is that once again the court had to intervene as the police officials probing the rape of the wife of an IAS officer botched up the probe, thereby resulting in the accused being getting bail and being let of easily.

The rape of the wife of the IAS officer had occurred on July 14 and 15.  The High Court has ordered a fresh investigation into a sexual assault case, expressing concern over the mishandling of the complaint and the alleged police negligence. The incident took place on July 14 and 15, when the victim claims the accused entered her home around 11:30 pm and raped her at gunpoint.

The victim has alleged that despite the severity of the crime, the police delayed filing an FIR and initially registered only minor charges against the accused. She further claimed that she was pressured by the accused’s wife and son to withdraw her complaint and that police officers refused to collect crucial CCTV footage showing the accused entering her house.

Justice Bharadwaj, who presided over the case, expressed concern over the police’s actions, stating that the FIR undermined the seriousness of the sexual assault allegations. He ordered a fresh probe into the matter and directed that action be taken against the three police officials involved in the case.

Court Order

The High Court has instructed the current investigation officer to hand over all documents and the case diary to the Deputy Commissioner within three days. The investigation has since been transferred to the Women’s Police Station, with the Divisional Deputy Commissioner tasked with monitoring the case closely.

BJP leader Amit Malviya has come down heaviliy on the Mamata government. Taking to X, Malviya launched a scathing attack at the Mamata government. He said, “After rape and murder of a young woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College & hospital, another SHOCKING incident emerges from West Bengal. In the area, under the jurisdiction of Lake Police Station, wife of an IAS officer was raped over two days, on July 14-15th, at gunpoint. The woman reported the matter to Kolkata Police, but they did not investigate the matter properly. The police even tried to destroy evidence and manipulate the investigation. Scathing observations by the Calcutta High Court, which has ordered an inquiry against five police officers, including the then OC. ”

Since early 2024, Mamata government has been in the dock for not taking adequate steps to protect the women.  First, in January it was the women of Sandeshkhali who were gangraped by the goons of TMC followed by the recent brutal murder of the trainee doctor in Kolkata. What is alarming is that in all these case Mamata government tried to cover up the heinous crime ad tried to protect the culprits.
